Army patrols Ahmedabad Ahmedabad, March 28 The police said an indefinite curfew was clamped on the locality and paramilitary personnel moved in following incidents of arson and stone-pelting. The police fired five rounds and burst tear gas shells to disperse the mob that had torched a hotel and a few shops. The body of an unidentified man, cut into pieces, was found from a drainage in the Jamalpur area last night, it said. Meanwhile, the situation in six other curfew-bound walled city areas, namely Kalupur, Dariapur, Karanj, Haveli, Vejalpur and Shahpur was peaceful. Night curfew was still on in the Danilimda area in the city. Curfew was also imposed on Anand town last night after two persons were stabbed in the bus stand area of the town leading to tension. The police burst tear gas shells to disperse a mob after it set afire some vehicles and indulged in arson and stone-pelting. Khambhat town was also brought under indefinite curfew last night following incidents of arson after police fired seven rounds and burst a volley of tear gas shells to disperse a rampaging mob. Meanwhile, in the temple town of Dakor in Kheda district, the police has made elaborate security arrangements for today’s ‘Falguni Poornima’ which attracts over a million pilgrims, mostly travelling on foot, from across the state every year. However, due to the current unrest, only a few thousand pilgrims were likely to turn up. A report from Anand said that a bank official of Borsad, who was among the four persons stabbed yesterday, died at a hospital last night even as the condition of two others was described as serious. In Ahmedabad, curfew was relaxed only for women from 9 a.m. today in the areas under Shahpur, Dariapur and Gaekwad Haveli police stations, from 2 p.m. in Kalupur and Karanj and for five hours from 9 a.m. in Vejalpur, except in the Vasna Chowki area. In the Danilimda area, curfew has been relaxed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Meanwhile, the Gujarat police, after ensuring peaceful observance of Muharram early this week, has made stringent security arrangements across the state in view of the festivals of Holi, Good Friday and Easter that fall over the weekend.
