Landslide win for Congress in MCD poll
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 27
The Congress was today heading for a landslide victory in 134-member Municipal Corporation of Delhi, winning 97 of the 121 seats and the BJP trailing far behind. The BJP had dominated the civic body with 80 seats. For the first time the Congress would control the local body and the Delhi Government.

The electorate in the Capital followed the Assembly poll trend of rejecting the BJP and the poll results indicated that the party had suffered losses even in its strongholds.

Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, flanked by her Cabinet colleagues said the victory for the Congress was a referendum to the performance of the Delhi Government.

Ms Dikshit said the people of Delhi have given the Congress an added responsibility and her government in close coordination with the civic body will make its best efforts to fulfil their aspirations.

The BJP General Secretary Pyarelal Khandelwal today expressed surprise at the drubbing of the party in the municipal elections in Delhi and said anti-incumbency was the main factor responsible for the party’s dismal electoral performance.
