I am interested in a career related to civil engineering or construction management. Please suggest a suitable option other than in the field of architecture. Sameer Dhillon A One suitable option could be Quantity Surveying. These skilled professionals are very much in demand both at home and abroad. But the demand is not sufficiently met. A QS is a professional who is well conversant with technical building and engineering aspects of construction as well as commercial aspects related to contracts. So we can say that he combines both the commercial as well as the technical aspects of construction which makes him extremely valuable. A 10+2 or equivalent with PCM from a recognised institution is the basic eligibility for admission to the Surveyors Course. The examination is conducted by the Institution of Surveyors, New Delhi for Building & Quantity Surveying and other branches of surveying twice a year at various centres in the country. The institution conducts first, intermediate, final and direct final examinations. The recently opened GGS Indraprastha University, Delhi is also planning to launch a Bachelor of Technology Programme in Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Contracting in association with CIDC. A qualified surveyor performs a variety of jobs related to construction. He takes detailed measurements from the plan once it is approved by an architect. Before the construction goes on-line he calculates the cost of the works, prepares schedules to be priced by tenders for the purpose of valuation in lump-sum contracts. He assists in negotiations and obtaining quotations and administering the contract. He may also serve as an arbitrator when needed. As far as employment prospects are concerned, a QS is in demand in both the public and private sectors. They are required by various government departments like the Military Engineering Services (M/o Defence), M/o Surface Transport, NPCC etc. and private corporate companies. Fashion designer Q My daughter is at an very impressionable age, insists on becoming a fashion designer like several of her classmates. She says there’s more money in fashion than in any other field of design. Is it true? Rupneet Kaur A Yes there is a lot of money in this field. But for a successful few. The fancy salaries and glitzy photo-features that we see in the doublepage spreads of fashion glossies are only for the handful of genuinely talented designers graduating from the premier fashion schools. That too, after years of sweat and hard work. For the rest, establishing a toehold in the industry is no cakewalk. What you can do as a parent is to arrange for her to meet a couple of designers so that she goes into the field with her eyes open. Then if she is convinced she is cut out for it, let her prepare for the entrance exams of some top-of-the-line institutes such as NIFT, NID, etc. If she makes it through the highly competitive selection procedure, you can be assured that she has the necessary aptitude. The course should hopefully groom and equip her with the necessary skills to make it in this industry. Reservation Q Could you please tell me if there is any relaxation for reserved category candidates in departmental examinations in the state government? Suresh Ram A State Governments can lower the qualifying marks for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe candidates in examinations held for higher posts exclusively reserved for them in a department. A Supreme Court bench recently upheld the Madhya Pradesh government’s decision to lower the pass marks from 50% to 40% for SC/ST candidates in an examination for promotion to a reserved post. The court also ruled that successful reserved category candidates shall receive all benefits from the day of promotion. Oceanography Q I am thinking of doing Master’s in Oceanography. Could you tell me about the universities in India where this subject is taught and also the career prospects in this field? Jagjit Kairon A Oceanography is an inter-disciplinary science that is broadly divided into physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, geological oceanography and marine biology. At times these disciplines overlap because the marine environment is influenced by various chemical, physical and biological processes, which in turn makes this science so exciting. Studying the geophysical characteristics of coastal margins and harnessing the ocean’s mineral resources can be very interesting. The following universities offer Master’s level courses in Oceanography: Cochin University of Science & Technology, Kochi, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. Job opportunities for Oceanographers exist in private sector companies, particularly in the areas of production and research in marine industries, and in public sector organisations such as Oil India and in government establishments such as the Geological Survey of India and the Meteorological Survey of India.
