CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE Disability Q Does the Rehabilitation Council of India offer employment facilities for persons with disability? Who can one contact for rehabilitation of such people? Deepali Bhalla A No. RCI does not provide any employment for the disabled. Nor does it perform any intermediary role between various organizations offering employment to the disabled. For any such help, it is best to contact the Ministry of Social Welfare or Ministry of Disability Welfare/Commissioner of Disability in your state. You could also contact the Secretary, M/o Social Justice & Empowerment, GoI, Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi 110001. TQM Course Q I am an electrical engineer working in the private sector. Is there any university-based TQM course in India? If so, please give me details. Mandeep Singh A With the support of industry and the M/o Industry, Lucknow University has started two courses — PG Diploma in Quality Management (PGDQM, 1-yr) and Masters Degree in Total Quality Management (MTQM, 2-yr). The unique thing about these courses is that they are university-based programmes which are otherwise taught only through workshops. B. The PGDQM aims at training and educating students in basic quality functions and preparing executives for future quality requirements etc. While the first year of the master’s degree programme is the same as that of PGDQM, it focuses on quality management techniques, continuous improvement techniques, philosophy, culture, model of TQM etc. 5 weeks of summer training is sandwiched between the two years. The total intake is 40. For PGDQM, a master’s in Science or Management or BE/BTech is required. Diploma holders in engineering should have 5 years work experience. For MTQM, a Science/Engineering/Tech graduate can appear for the 2-hour objective type entrance test followed by GD and interview. The M/o Industry has entrusted Lucknow University to introduce correspondence courses for professionals working in the industry. The 27 nodal centres of the ministry are likely to be used as contact points for this purpose. I am not sure whether these courses are recognised by AICTE, though. For further enquires contact: The Additional Director, Quality Management Programme, Department of Statistics, University of Lucknow, Lucknow-226007. Tel: 0522-370834. E-mail: ipprlu@lwl.vsnl.net.in or tllu@lwl.vsnl.net.in. Technology Q I would be grateful if you could give me information on the Army Institute of Technology. Ravinder Gill A The Army Institute of Technology, Dighi Hills, Pune 411015 offers BE in Computer, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. However only children of regular/ex-army personnel with 10+2 PCM (50% agg) are eligible. Selection is based on Merit in the entrance test held at 33 centres. If you are selected, you will have to execute a bond to join the army upon graduation as a Permanent/Short Service Commissioned Officer, if found fit by SSB and Medical Board. Biophysics Q I have completed BSc (Physics) and now wish to do MSc in biophysics. Please give me information on the universities that offer this course. Puran Chand A MSc Biophysics is offered at the following universities:
Eligibility for all the courses is BSc (H) Degree. IVY league Q I have applied to some of the top Ivy League colleges in the USA, but I am not very sure of making it. Would it greatly affect my career prospects if I go to a lesser-known university? Neha Verma A For most Indian students targeting the US for higher studies, the big state schools, like the University of Southern California and the University of Michigan, or the ever-popular elite colleges like Dartmouth and Smith remain their top choices. Often students strive for colleges that carry a lot of weight back home, which can produce some odd choices at times. For instance, they may end up rejecting Amherst, one of the 10 most selective schools in America, in favour of Boston University, because everyone here has heard of the latter. But an increasing number of applicants are recognising the benefits of spending four years in the intimate, rural setting of an Amherst or a Middlebury. Even community colleges -junior colleges without residential facilities can be an attractive bet because many of them are outside big cities, where students particularly from a protected Indian background like ours would feel safer. Their size also makes them less intimidating than a large state university, where some students say they feel lost or anonymous. And professors at small colleges are generally more accessible. An American scholar who graduated from Berkley who dropped in at my office recently reiterated this very point. He got to meet his esteemed Eco professor just once in his entire 4-year stay at the univ (since he had made it to the Dean’s list, he was no lallu-panju student either). PCMB Q After Class XII (PCMB) where can I apply for BTech (Biotechnology) in India? Baljit Kairon A The following universities offer a 4-yr BTech in Biotechnology and related areas:
The following Integrated MTech (Biotech) courses which are just a year or so longer than BTech but which give you a PG qualification are also an excellent bet.
Admission to both IIT programmes is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). While IIT, Delhi requires 10+2 (PCM), IIT, Kharagpur requires 10+2 (PCMB).
Slet Q I am a final year student of MA (History). Could you please tell me about the eligibility criteria for appearing in the state-level eligibility test (SLET)? Will I be able to teach anywhere in the country? Anju Batla A 15 states whose educational service commissions recruit lecturers for government colleges and universities in the state hold a State Level Eligibility Test (SLET). The SLET, which is duly accredited by the UGC, is on the pattern of UGC/CSIR-NET. However, those who have cleared the NET are exempted from appearing in the state-level tests. The typical eligibility for this test is a postgraduate degree (55% agg). You can take the Test even if you are appearing in the final year/semester of your course. However, your candidature will be provisional subject to your securing the prescribed minimum marks. The test is aimed at assessing -your mental ability and general awareness besides your in-depth knowledge of the subject. The answer to your second question unfortunately is "No". Following complaints regarding the "disparity in standards of the two exams, UGC has ruled that henceforth those qualifying the SLET of a particular state are only eligible to apply for the post of lectureship in universities and colleges belonging to that state. The NET on the other hand, which is comparatively tougher, qualifies you to teach anywhere in the country. Although the minimum requirement for lectureship is an MA with NET/SLET, in reality those with higher qualifications such as MPhil and PhD stand a better chance.
