CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE Q: I am a Class XII commerce student. I am keen on building a career in finance, particularly in the stock market. Is there any course in this field at the undergraduate level? Sarandeep Ghotra A: Delhi University’s Sukhdev College of Business Studies, Jhilmil Colony, New Delhi 110092 has introduced a 3-year Bachelor’s degree in Financial & Investment Analysis. This six-semester programme is complemented with intensive project work and on-the-job training especially geared to meet the demand for middle level executives in financial companies, banks, insurance sector and the stock market. The number of seats is limited. 40 candidates (reservations included) are selected for this course after a written exam, group discussion and interview. Other courses you could take up on the side if you opt for a regular BCom/BBA are CA or any of the following: Diploma in Business Finance (DBF) offered by ICFAI, Hyderabad (www.icfai.org) through distance learning. The other option would be to do an MBA in Finance or a Master’s in Finance & Control after your graduation. NCHMT Q: I’m in Class XII. I wish to pursue a diploma course in Hotel Management offered by the NCHMT. Could you please tell me about the eligibility and selection procedure? Also will I be eligible for advanced courses abroad? Varun Cheema A: The National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology, New Delhi, conducts a joint entrance exam for admission to the 3-year diploma programme in Hotel Management offered by its 21 affiliated institutes all over the country. Eligibility is 10+2 or equivalent exam in any academic or vocational stream with English as a compulsory subject. The age limit is 22 years (25 years for SC/ST). The exam is an objective-type written test designed to assess your ability in reasoning and logical deduction, numerical ability and scientific aptitude, General Knowledge and English. The first three sections can be answered in Hindi or English. If you clear this exam, you will be interviewed by a panel constituted by the Principal of the Institute as well as professionals from the hotel industry and the Ministry of Tourism. The panel will assess your aptitude, attitude, overall personality and suitability for the industry. You will be asked questions concerning your interests, hobbies and why you have chosen this profession. Finally, a merit list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the objective-type test and interview. To score well, do stay abreast with current events - both national and international and brush up whatever you have learnt in the last few years at school. Also make it a habit to read current newsmagazines and the daily newspapers. Flipping through a couple of books on mental aptitude and tests of reasoning will also help. The application deadline for JEE 2002 was 20th Feb. For further information, contact: NCHMCT, Library Avenue, Pusa Complex, New Delhi 110012. Ph: 5751756, 5782744. And yes some of the good schools of hotel management abroad do give credits to diploma holders for admission to their advanced courses. For a comprehensive
overview of this field and details of the various degree and
diploma-level courses in hotel management you may refer to CARING’s
Guide to Careers in Hotel Management. Electronics Q: I am studying electronics engineering at Pune. I am keen in starting a workshop for repairing computer-printed circuit boards. As the current practice is to replace the faulty PCB including the ICs which is an expensive proposition, I would like to specialise in replacing the faulty components, which is mainly why I opted for the electronics branch. Please suggest where I can get training in this area after my degree. Maninder Gill A: Although there are many courses in hardware engineering, not many focus on PCB-level repair. However, you can try courses in computer hardware maintenance offered by CEDTI, ET&T, Jetking or UPTRON-ACL. Alternatively, you could also take up a job in the test and repair centre (TRC) of any computer maintenance firm after your BE. This will give you the necessary hands-on training. However, there is a solid reason why the entire motherboard is replaced instead of repairing it. Number one, it saves time. It saves effort. And it saves money. Repairing the defective ICs is by no means a cheaper option. As a matter of fact, replacing individual chips often costs the same if not more than replacing a motherboard. Besides, removing the individual chip requires an SMB extensor card which costs several lakhs. Moreover, after all this effort, the reliability of the repaired or replaced chip or component cannot be guaranteed. The same also applies to the hard-disk. Repairing is only feasible in the case of monitors and CD ROMs. So do give it a serious thought. Luckily, since you are only midway through your course, you have enough time to re-consider your plan.
Nursing in UK Q: I am working as a nurse. Is it true that there is a shortage of nursing staff in the USA? Can one apply directly? Also, I have heard that Indian nurses are preferred in the UK? How does one apply for a job? Payal Anand A: Yes it’s true that there is a shortage of trained nurses in the US. But Indian nurses wishing to apply for an American work visa must take the mandatory National Council for Licensure Exam (NCLEX)/Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), before applying for a job. For details regarding CGFNS log on to www.cgfns.org. Of late there have been quite a few ads seeking to recruit Indian nurses. Yes Indian nurses are preferred in the UK because they are fluent in English and their qualifications and service standards are amongst the best in the world. Also if they speak Hindi, Punjabi, or Tamil, they are ideal for serving the sizeable South-Asian population in UK. In fact there is a huge shortfall of over 22,000 nurses. Salaries vary between £12,000 for trainees and £34,000 pounds for senior nurses p.a. A further 3.6% raise has been announced by the UK Ministry for Health. However, living costs are high. A fully furnished room will cost you anywhere between £2,400 - 4,800 p.a. to rent. Add another £150 p.m. for travel. How to apply: The procedure is slightly cumbersome but not difficult. Presuming that you are a registered midwife, you must first obtain a Nursing Licence issued by UKCC, the nursing regulatory body in the UK. After that you can apply for any job. Once you have been selected, your employer has to seek a work permit from the UK government. Once this is obtained, you can apply for a visa. Most overseas nurses start off with a one-year contract. However, not much can be said about the job security. Although the National Health Service, UK’s public health authority recruits 85% of all nurses, one has been seeing a fair number of ads in Indian papers in recent times. One such organisation you could contact is the Indo-UK Nurses Association (INKUNA). Website: www.indouknurses.org.
BE Computers Q: I have passed B.E (Computers) with distinction in the year 2001. I would like to take up a different job from the norm. Please help me out. Atul Mohan A: When you say that you would like to take up a job that is "different from the norm" - are you talking about a different kind of job in IT (despite the slowdown, there are still plenty of opportunities within IT itself) or are you looking at another field altogether? In which case the options are unlimited, provided you train for them. If you would like to broadbase your options significantly, then an MBA in IT/Systems or in any other functional area of your choice from a top-ten B-school would be the best bet. Particularly since you are academically brilliant. Have you ruled out the idea of pursuing a MTech in India from one of IITs for instance or doing MS from US completely? If you are looking at an MBA, the entrance exams happen from Dec - Jan. Similarly, it will take a while to prepare for your GRE and process your applications for an American college. So in the meanwhile, Why not take up a job in the IT industry while you prepare for the entrances alongside? This will also give you a first-hand opportunity to explore your options within the industry and identify your talents and areas of interest. Besides the work-ex will always come in handy. Lastly, even the most routine of jobs can be handled "differently" depending on how creatively you approach it.
