“They must go. They cannot be trusted again. They have destroyed Punjab and cheated its people. Given a chance, they will cheat the people again.” This is how the All-India Congress Committee chief, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, unleashed her “ruthless attack” on the SAD-BJP alliance as she gave a headstart to her party election’s campaign in Punjab by addressing large, impressive gatherings at Balachaur, Jalandhar and Abohar today.

Badal, Sukhbir seek 5 cr damages
Notices to Sonia Gandhi, Amarinder Singh
Chandigarh, February 5
Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh were today issued notices by UT Chief Judicial Magistrate C.L. Mohal for March 15, on a suit seeking Rs 5 crore as damages, filed by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Taking some major decisions the Union Cabinet today approved the Voluntary Retirement Scheme for its surplus employees besides decontrolling of sugar and removal of licence for dealers and restriction on storage and movement of wheat, paddy, rice, coarse grains, sugar, edible oilseeds and edible oils.

Tatas acquire VSNL, IBP goes to IOC

The Tatas turned into a telecom behemoth today after the Government announced the sale of its 25 per cent stake along with management control in the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd to Panatone, a Tata group company, at a price of Rs 1,439 crore.

In a firm endorsement of New Delhi’s concerns, the USA today asked Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to act to reduce cross-border terrorism and crack down on terrorist outfits in a way that would give India confidence.

IPervez Musharraf slamabad, February 5
Brushing aside international concerns on cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf today accused India of “denigrating and maligning the freedom struggle” there to which he pledged his country’s continued “political, moral and diplomatic support.” He also offered talks to India.
