8 killed in avalanches

Four soldiers and as many porters were buried under snow following avalanches at Tangdar and Boniyar last evening. Sources said four soldiers were buried under snow in the Tangdar sector last evening.

Powell rejects mediatory role

Islamabad, January 16
Secretary of State Colin Powell tonight rejected a mediatory role for the USA in resolving disputes between India and Pakistan but said he is carrying “some ideas” to New Delhi for initiating a dialogue between the two countries on several issues, including Kashmir. He, however, made it clear that the immediate aim is de-escalation of political and military tensions.

Pak fire destroys files on ultras
Islamabad, January 16
Amid reports that sensitive documents regarding banned terrorist outfits were destroyed, Pakistan has ordered a probe into the fire that engulfed the building housing several ministries.

Five members of the dreaded Dawood Ibrahim group responsible for the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts, five suspected hijackers of the 1999 IC-814 flight from Kathmandu to New Delhi and five suspected Sikh terrorists, including Paramjit Singh Panjwad and Wadhawa Singh Babbar, are in the list of 20 terrorists presently hiding in Pakistan whose extradition has been demanded by the Government of India.

Lashkar’s hawala dealer arrested
New Delhi, January 16
The Delhi Police today arrested a hawala operator suspected to have supplied Rs 35 lakh to the arrested four Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists accused of planning to disrupt the January 26 Republic Day function.

BJP to contest 23 seats
New Delhi, January 16
The BJP today released the list of 23 candidates for the Assembly elections in Punjab dropping three of its sitting MLAs. Announcing the list of candidates for Punjab, Manipur and Lok Sabha by-elections, BJP General Secretary Maya Singh said the party was fielding 23 candidates in Punjab which was cleared by the Central Election Committee (CEC) last evening.
