CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE

Q Could you please tell me about the entry procedure for joining the judicial services in the armed forces? I would like to know if one could enter through the Combined Defence Services Exam?

Vivek Chauhan

A There is a division in the Indian Army known as the Judge Advocate General Branch for which Law graduates and young advocates (male) are enrolled directly for providing legal assistance to the Army to deal with civil cases and for disciplinary action against serving personnel. These legal officers advise on evidence for court martial, drafting charges and conducting prosecutions. They also provide general legal advice to the staff. Entry is not through the Combined Defence Services Examination, but through a written test and interview conducted by the SSB. Instead, look out for separate advertisements in Employment News and leading national dailies or log on to their respective websites.

The Indian Navy offers direct entry to law graduates in the Law Cadre, Executive Branch.

Unmarried males qualify for both Permanent as well as Short Service Commission, whereas their female counterparts only get the latter. Selection is through a 4-day SSB interview at Bangalore/Bhopal followed by the mandatory medical exam.

READER TO PROF

Q How long does it take for a Reader to be promoted as Professor?

Ritu Beri

A The University Grants Commission has recently decided that a reader must complete 8 years in the grade to be eligible for promotion to the grade of a professor. This works out to a minimum of 21 years of service for becoming a professor — if you meet all the other necessary requirements that is, like attaining specified professional standards while being engaged in fruitful academic activities. Understandably, teacher activists are up in arms against this decision and the UGC has had to discontinue the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for colleges. However, the scheme will continue to operate for readers in university departments.

One of the necessary requirements for college lecturers in the selection grade under the UGC revised pay scale (1996) is that they have to clear the mandatory number of refresher courses (in states other than their own if necessary), with a gap of one year between courses.

DUBBING ARTISTE

Q I’m keen on making a career in the film industry as a dubbing artiste. Is it a viable option?

Krishan Sharma

A Considering the multilingual nature of our country, there is a great demand for dubbing artistes. Some of the larger film and television production houses have their own in-house dubbing departments.

As a dubbing artiste you should not only be fluent in the language but also versatile enough to match your inflections, tone and pauses to synchronise with the original sound track and visuals. For example, the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, which were originally made in Hindi, have now been dubbed in most of the Indian and several foreign languages. Also, almost every Hollywood film, big or small, which is now screened in India, has a Hindi release. Similarly, a large number of popular serials and ‘infotainment’ programmes are now being dubbed in Indian languages to increase their viewership.

In TV serials, dubbing artistes are paid about Rs. 1000/- per episode, but depending on the artiste’s capability and the length and complexity of the role, they command as much as Rs. 10,000/- per episode. In films you can make as much as Rs. 75,000/- by lending your voice to a single character on the screen, if you are really good.

BA FROM IGNOU

Q I want to do BA (History) from IGNOU. Could you please tell me the admission criteria?

Karan Singh

A The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offers History as a course in its graduation programme. Depending on you educational qualifications, you could choose from two modes of entry for graduation courses offered by IGNOU.

For the Non-formal Open University Graduation Programme (3½-yr) you should be 20 years old but need not possess any formal qualifications. You will be admitted only after passing the entrance test. The eligibility for the regular Graduation programmes (3-yr) is a pass in Class XII.

For further information, you could contact Regional Director, IGNOU Regional Centre, Mamangalam, Palarivattom, P.O, COCHIN 682 025 (Kerala) or log on to www.ignou.org. Ph: 0484-340203/348189/ 330891

BSF RECRUITMENT

Q I am a student of class XI. I would like to join the BSF. Could you please guide me?

Gurjinder Gill

A The Border Security Force (BSF) is responsible for the collection of intelligence reports, protection of life and property in the border areas and prevention of smuggling and infiltration. At times at the request of the state governments, BSF personnel are also deployed for internal security duty.

During war, BSF protects vital installations such as airfields and bridges against enemy raid. It holds ground till the main forces arrive and assists the army in maintaining the line of communication.

BSF has two main branches: — (i) The General Duty Service (ii) Technical Service (including Communication). There is also the Medical Service branch that looks after the Force’s medical needs.

For a successful career in the Paramilitary Forces, suitable candidates are usually above average graduates with a sense of adventure and interest in tough outdoor life though there are few openings in this field for women as constables and researchers. In all the protective services, importance is given to physical fitness, i.e. height, weight, chest measurement, etc. in addition to academic achievements.

Matriculates are recruited as Constables and Guards.

The Special Selection Board (SSB) of the Central Police Organisations (M/o Home Affairs, GoI) recruits graduates below 25 years as Assistant Commandant/Deputy Superintendent of Police/Company Commander in the BSF and CRPF.

The 3-stage selection process includes a written exam, a physical efficiency test and an Interview followed by a medical exam.

For further information, contact:

Deputy Director (Pers), BSF HQ, Block No. 10, CGO Complex, Lodhi Rd, New Delhi 110003

DESIGNING

Q After Class XII, I am keen on taking up a course at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Could you please give me some information about the undergraduate courses offered at this institute?

Rajat Gupta

A The National Institute of Design (NID), Paldi, Ahmedabad, is one of the country’s premier institutions for state-of-the-art research, education, advanced training and consulting in design. It is an autonomous institution set up by the M/o Commerce & Industry, GoI.

NID offers both Graduate as well as Postgraduate Diploma Programmes in Design. While the former are open to students with a pass in Class XII, the latter are meant for graduates in specific fields.
