New Delhi, January 14
Defence Minister George Fernandes today ruled out any de-escalation of military build-up along the India-Pakistan border saying that tension can be defused only when cross-border terrorism is effectively stopped by Islamabad. (28k, 56k)

India, China come closer
New Delhi, January 14
The visiting Chinese Premier, Mr Zhu Rongji, today had some very “useful and strategically significant” talks with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh wherein the Indian leadership is understood to have asked Mr Zhu to speed up the Line of Actual Control clarification process.

Ultras attack ammo depot, kill 2 jawans
Jammu, January 14
Two Army jawans were killed and three others seriously wounded in an encounter with terrorists in the Khanetar area of Poonch late last night, Army sources said today. The sources said an Army foot patrol was heading towards a makeshift ammunition dump at Khanetar when militants sprayed bullets at them from a nearby hilltop, killing two soldiers on the spot and seriously injuring three others.

Fresh snow in Kufri, Narkanda
Shimla, January 14
Kufri and upper areas of Shimla district had snow this morning resulting in a cold wave. Tourists enjoyed the snow at Kufri while roads were closed at many places in the interior areas.
