Steps taken to save people from shelling

Jammu, January 10
Measures to protect people along the Indo-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir from mortar shelling and firing have been initiated, official sources said here today.

The measures, taken along the international border and Line of Control (LoC), include setting up of two “war councils” at divisional levels for Jammu and Kashmir, they said, adding that instructions had been issued to different agencies and district heads for its speedy implementation.

The first phase of the measures was initiated with the setting up of bunkers and digging of trenches in several border villages in Jammu, Kathua, Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu division, they said.

So far over 275 bunkers and trenches have been set up in over 120 border village in the Jammu-Poonch sector.

A senior state government official said a core group of ministers headed by Housing Minister Gulam Mohiuddin Shah along with Chief Secretary Ashok Jaitley and DGP Ashok Suri visited the border districts and reviewed the situation and measures taken by district chiefs.

The measures were taken following the killing of 12 persons and injuries to 32 persons of 42 villages due to Pakistani shelling and firing along LoC and international border during the past one month, the sources said, adding that, so far, over 80,000 persons from four districts have either been evacuated or have migrated over the past one month.

These people have been temporarily sheltered in different government buildings in Jammu, Kathua, Poonch and Rajouri districts.

The Deputy Commissioners of the councils have reviewed the preparations to assess the threat perception from across the border, the sources said.

They have identified 57 safe zones in Jammu division for over four lakh persons living along the border, the sources said, adding that transportation and relief arrangements for the migrants had also been formulated. PTI

Jammu, January 10
Clamouring over the continued “stepmotherly” treatment meted out to them, refugees from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) have floated an organisation, R-47, under the presidentship of Mr Balraj Kumar Bakshi, for launching a struggle for securing “honour, dignity and rights”.

According to Mr Bakshi, two lakh people had become refugees in 1947 and now the number had increased to 10 lakh, but still we are without rights and representation in the state legislature and Parliament.”

He has blamed the successive state governments and the Centre for having given a raw deal to the refugees from PoK. He said “All we got during the past 54 years allotment of over 6.45 lakh kanals of land, 1,628 two room quarters, 679 residential plots 46 hamlets.”

The R-47 has demanded representation in the state legislature and the Parliament, reservation in government jobs and in professional colleges for their children.

It has also urged the state and the Centre to set up a development corporation to formulate and implement plans for the upliftment of PoK refugees.

The organisation has demanded ownership rights of the land and houses allotted to them, voting rights and right to compete for jobs and seats in government departments and professional colleges.
