Musharraf sets up panel on Kashmir

President Pervez Musharraf today constituted a National Kashmir Committee to mobilise world opinion for the settlement of the Kashmir issue in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolution. 

Pak’s propaganda under cloud
New Delhi, January 9
The credibility of Pakistan’s “no-evidence” propaganda has come under cloud as a classified government document conclusively proves that New Delhi has been sharing detailed evidences of Pakistan’s naked involvement in its proxy war against India since as far back as 1985.

Ultra holed up in mosque shot
Srinagar, January 9
A militant belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen was killed and another injured inside a mosque when they engaged the security forces in an exchange of fire in the Tangmarg area of Baramula district today. Minor damage was caused to the mosque, the police said.

A US military plane crashed today in Pakistan, the White House says. 

Excise on petrol, diesel may go up
New Delhi, January 9
The government is likely to increase excise duty on petrol and diesel by more than 100 per cent soon to mop up an additional Rs 2,000 crore during January-March 2002, but the burden will not be passed on to consumers.

Stay on DCs’ transfer vacated

The ongoing battle between the Election Commission of India and Punjab’s three Deputy Commissioners culminated today with a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court holding that the ECI’s remarks while recommending the transfer of the officers would not be considered “stigmatic or adverse in any manner in their service career”.

Sukhbir not to contest: CM

The Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, today took a tactical move to silence his critics within the party and outside by announcing that his son Sukhbir Badal would not contest the forthcoming elections in the state.


Militants’ messages intercepted
Talk of attack on PM; experts called in
Dharamsala, January 9
Following the interception of wireless messages by militants regarding an attack on the Prime Minister and other top leaders by the ITBP in the Nurpur-Chuari area today, the security forces have been put on high alert and services of communication experts are being sought to install high-frequency wireless sets in the area.
