India rules out talks with Pakistan
Musharraf relents, says India’s list of 20 under scrutiny
New Delhi, January 7
India today ruled out the possibility of a dialogue until Islamabad showed a change in its attitude to control groups indulging in cross-border terrorism. Emerging from a two-hour long meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh said: “Where is the question of dialogue when there is no change in attitude (of Pakistan)?”.

India is understood to have handed over its “minimum list of demands” to Pakistan for easing the current military standoff between the two and categorically conveyed that time for action with Islamabad was only “a few days” after which “other options” would be open to New Delhi.

Israel backs war on terrorism

India today got a further boost in its fight against terrorism with Israel not only stressing that Pakistan had not done enough to root out terrorist outfits but also advocating New Delhi’s inclusion into the UN Security Council as a permanent member and to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Give up terrorism to resolve Kashmir: Blair to Pervez
Islamabad, January 7
British Prime Minister Tony Blair tonight bluntly told President Pervez Musharraf that the time had come to abandon the option of using violence as a weapon to resolve the Kashmir issue and settle for a comprehensive dialogue with India to peacefully resolve the vexed problem.

Defence Minister George Fernandes today ruled out the pulling out of troops from the Indo-Pak border despite Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf ordering selective withdrawal of his troops.

Case against Bhattal takes new turn
Bathinda, January 7
The case of corruption registered against former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal under Section 13 of the Prevention of the Corruption Act and Section 409 of IPC for her alleged involvement in bungling in the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, took a new turn when the complainant, Mr Balwant Singh Dhillon, President, District Amateur Boxing Association, Bathinda, moved an application in the court of Special Judge for rectification/return of challan presented in the same case by the Vigilance Bureau on December 27, 2001.

Congress MPs seek one policy
Ticket to relatives
New Delhi, January 7
The tussle among the Punjab Congress leaders over issuing of party ticket to the confidants and relatives of party MPs continued today with five MPs meeting AICC treasurer Motilal Vora in the evening and demanding a “uniform policy” by the high command on the issue. Some of the MPs had earlier met Congress President Sonia Gandhi individually.

Congress list further delayed
Chandigarh, January 7
The list of Congress candidates for the Punjab Assembly elections has been further delayed by a few more days. The list was expected to be released this evening.

Put off poll, say border residents
Indo-Pak Border (Amritsar), January 7
Panic-stricken residents of border areas who have moved to safer places due to the Army build-up have urged the Election Commission to postpone the Assembly elections scheduled for next month as it is difficult to hold free and fair elections in the prevailing situation.
