Pakistan’s fresh brinkmanship of offering its genuine hand of friendship to India rebounded embarrassingly, with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee asking President Pervez Musharraf to extend the gesture by eliminating terrorism operating from that country’s soil perpetrating “mindless violence in India.”

Even as he categorised as “totally unacceptable” Pakistan’s ploy of using terrorism as a “pre-dialogue tactic for bilateral talks,” External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh took exception to the USA reportedly sending a special envoy to India and Pakistan to lessen the tension between the two countries.

Indian officials back from Pak
New Delhi, January 5
A special Indian Airlines flight returning from Islamabad touched base here today carrying 121 Indian nationals, including officials from the Indian High Commission in Pakistan.

20 more Pak troops killed
Jammu, January 5
In a day-long fierce gunbattle, at least 20 Pakistani bunkers were destroyed and 20 Pakistani soldiers killed across Poonch when Indian forces retaliated with artillery guns, including Bofors, after two Army men were killed and several others wounded in unprovoked Pakistani shelling.

10 Army men killed in mine blasts
Amritsar, January 5
About 10 Army men, including junior commissioned officers, were killed and several others injured, in blasts during the unloading of mines on the Rajatal-Mahawa road near Attari, about 30 km from here, this evening. The blasts occurred a few kilometres away from the Indo-Pak border.

he Congress Central Election Committee has decided candidates for 71 of the 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab while decision about 35 seats has been kept pending. The party has already decided to give 11 seats to the CPI.


Chances of unity recede: Badal
Tanda (Hoshiarpur), January 5
Harping on peace and development, the Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal chief, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, today called Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee a “saviour”, who had solved many ills of Punjab and Punjabis. He indicated that the chances of unity between his camp and that of Mr Tohra were receding.
