CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE
Pervin Malhotra, Tribune’s career expert answers all your career queries.

Q Could you please tell me about the eligibility criteria to get enrolled for the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Programme?

Prashant Goyal.

A CPA is a professional qualification, similar to CA in India that is awarded by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

There are two ways of acquiring the American CPA: Passing all the papers of the CPA exam qualifies you to become a CPA and work in corporate houses. Training is not mandatory if you don't intend to practise as a public accountant. The other option is to pass the exam and gain three years of work experience under a practising CPA to acquire a practising licence. Eligibility is CA or any other recognised professional qualification such as CS, ICWA, MBA or a 3-year university degree, preferably in commerce.

CPA exams are held twice a year: on the first Wednesday of May and November. The exam consists of four papers spread over two days covering Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation & Business Law. Each paper has a 60 percent multiple-choice format and the rest of the paper is in essay-type and free response format. The pass percentage in each paper is a steep 75%.

On obtaining the CPA certification, you can either work abroad as an accountant or settle for MNCs in India that may prefer candidates with American accountancy qualifications.

Although some bodies in India offer to coach you for this exam (with exorbitant tuition fee), you may directly write to AICPA, 12011, Avenue of the Americas, New York NY 10036 to send you the study material. Nevertheless, you'll have to go to the US to take the exam.

If you would like to contact the India representative for the Becker's CPA Review Course call New Horizon Educational Institute, C-47 GK Part I, New Delhi 110048. Ph: 6413634/6466213. Website: www.beckercpa.com

A The Indian Institute of Forest Management, Nehru Nagar, Bhopal 462003 (MP), an autonomous institute under the M/o Environment & Forestry is the only one of its kind. It focuses on the economics of forestry and natural resources of India and Southeast Asia.

IIFM offers a 2-yr postgraduate course in Forest Management. The course is designed to familiarise students with various aspects of forestry as well as in the development and management of forests preparing them to become professional natural resource managers.

Admission to the programme is on the basis of the Common Admission Test (CAT) scores.

The fee for this 21-month long course is Rs 50,000. A stipend of Rs 1500/- p.m. is awarded to Indian students (except NRI sponsored) and those from SAARC countries.

IIFM has an active placement cell that boasts of 100% placement through campus recruitment. Organisations like the World Wildlife Fund, Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), World Bank, SIDA and US Aid Society for Development of Wasteland Development recruit students from IIFM.

Q I am told that the power sector recruits a large number of engineers. Could you please tell me which engineering colleges offer courses in power engineering?

Vaibhav Sharma.

A You are right. The power industry is expected to offer excellent opportunities in the years to come.

While this sector presently employs 10 lakh professionals, by the year 2007 the requirement is estimated to shoot up by another 4.5 lakh.

As for the next part of your question, the courses both at the BE as well as the ME level are very limited. The main reason being that the sector requires engineers from various disciplines ranging from electrical and mechanical to industrial.

The specific courses you could look at are:

Lukhdhirji Engineering College, Saurashtra University, Morbi, Dist Rajkot 363642 (Guj) Course: BE (Power Electronics).

Bapurao Deshmukh College of Engineering, Nagpur University, Sewagram, Dist Wardha 44210, (Mah). Course: BE (Power Electronics).

Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Jadavpur University 700032, Kolkata. Course: BE (Power Plant).

Birla Institute of Technology & Science, PO Box No 12, Pilani 333031, (Raj). Course: BS (Power Engg) (Distance).

Shanmugha College of Engineering, Bharathidasan University, Tirumalaisamudram, Thanjavur 613402 (TN). Course: ME (Power Electron/& Drives).

BMS College of Engineering, Visveswariah Technological University, PB No 1908, Bull Temple Rd, Bangaslore 560019 (Kar).

Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai 625015 (TN). Course: ME (Power Systems).

To cope with the changes that have been ushered in due to the restructuring of State Electricity Boards which have been corporatised and made globally competitive, NPTI, the apex functioning body under the M/o Power, has recently introduced a 2-year MBA (Power). The curriculum has been specially designed to weave in formal management theory with industry specific skills in order to equip techno-managers to implement and steer the change process.

Q My son is doing BSc (Biotechnology) and would like to do MSc in the subject as well. Which are the universities offering this course and the prospects in this field?

Dharam Pal Sharma.

A Biotechnology is basically research-oriented work and can relate to such diverse fields as agriculture, animal husbandry, pharmaceuticals, textiles, chemicals and environmental sciences. With the aid of biotechnology, researchers have been able to improve the quality, nutritional content and yield of food products, alter genetic defects in animals and humans, create pesticides that protect crops without harming consumers, deal with wastes in an environment friendly manner and so on. Continuous research in biotechnology keeps pushing the horizons of knowledge still further, making the scope of this field truly infinite.

Since biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science that integrates various disciplines such as biochemistry, microbiology, tissue culture, molecular biology, students from a wide range of academic backgrounds qualify for postgraduate studies in this highly specialised field. Biotechnology procedures have wide applications in forensic science, in the detection of criminals or parentage especially now, with our better understanding of DNA fingerprinting and genetics.

Many avenues of employment exist and many more are being added daily. In other words, it is unlikely that any Biotechnologist will remain unemployed in the years to come.

Those with a BSc degree in Physics, Biology, Agriculture, Veterinary, and Fishery Science, Pharmacy, or with Engg/Tech, MBBS/BDS or BS (Physician Asst., 4-yr) with 55% (agg) marks may apply for MSc Biotechnology at the following institutions:

University of Allahabad. Allahabad.

Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi

GB Pant Univ. of Agriculture & Technology, Pant Nagar.

Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.

University of Jammu, Jammu.

Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi

Punjab University, Chandigarh

Poona University, Pune

Punjabi University, Patiala

Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala.

Q What career option would be open to me after 10 + 2 in the science stream? I am a student of Class 10 and want to take a decision about my future soon.

Anurag Kaushal.

A After completing your 10+2 with science, you can choose to pursue almost any field.

Options related to the sciences include engineering, architecture, technology, civil aviation, merchant navy, computers, medicine, pharmacy, biotechnology and related courses, agriculture, pure sciences, meteorology and many others.

Besides, you are also free to pursue just about any other profession open to your arts or commerce counterparts.

What you really need to do at this stage is to try and narrow down your choice (s) to 1 or 2 options and then concentrate on planning a career around it.

Please send in your query preferably on a postcard along with your name, complete address and academic qualifications to:  Editor, Career Hotline, The Tribune, Sector 29, Chandigarh.

Making teachers’ courses ICT saavy

Amritsar
To make teacher education ICT (Information and Communication Technology) savvy, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has developed a self-learning CD-ROM with English and Hindi commentaries in addition to several other CD-ROMs, particularly for education in human values. The ICT literate teachers can access online resources from the NCTE website http://www.note-in.org. Apart from that, the NCTE is giving to its recognised teacher education institutions, off-line digital resources on CD-ROMs.

The NCTE, a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament which has the mandate to plan and coordinate development of teacher education throughout the country, acts as a catalyst in improving the quality of teacher education.

Dr J. S. Dhillon, State Co-ordinator, Punjab says the NCTE has made ICT literacy a compulsory component of secondary pre-service teacher education. With the implementation of this decision, students of B.Ed., B.P.Ed., M.Ed. and M.P.Ed. will acquire ICT literacy and, thus, be able to prepare lesson plans in multimedia accessing on and offline resources, document creation and communication through e-mail.

An awareness camp to provide a first-hand experience on the use of CD-ROMs was organised at Khalsa College for education here at which Principals and teachers from Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ferozepore and Faridkot districts participated. They were given free sets of CD-ROMs for institutional use.

Mr Charanjit Singh Chadha, honorary secretary, Khalsa College Governing Council, Amritsar addressed the gathering and appreciated the efforts of the NCTE for ushering in an ICT revolution. Dr J. S. Dhillon, co-ordinator for Punjab ICT camps said these such would be organised in all parts of Punjab within two months.

The, NCTE would not only provide digital resources to the colleges of education, but also the much-needed on-line and offline assets.

The laboratory is being run in congested room. The apparatus in the lab is not up to the mark. Students allege the apparatus is very old even out of order. All practical work has been stopped in the lab as there is no proper infrastructure for the same.

One reader and two lecturers run the faculty. One post of professor and lecturer each are lying vacant. Two laboratory attendants are also required.

Students of the department have formed a society. The university did not provide funds to the department. So last year paint and whitewash was done by the students themselves.

Due to lack of teachers, M.Phil students have been undertaking teaching work in the past years. Lack of books is another problem. Students allege that the library does not have the latest books. Beside, students are even deprived of basic facilities like drinking water and toilet.
