Jalandhar, August 27
Endorsing the SGPC stance over the issue of voting rights to Sehajdharis, the Punjab Finance Minister and senior Akali leader, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, has said no legal recourse should be taken without the consent of the SGPC.

Talking to TNS here today, Capt Kanwaljit Singh suggested that efforts should be made for hammering out a consensus on the issue. He said the SGPC should have the final word on the issue and its verdict should be accepted by one and all.

The SAD secretary-general, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal, has been favouring voting rights to Sehajdharis whereas the SGPC president, Mr Jagdev Singh Talwandi, has been opposing it.

About the police officials facing charges of excesses during the days of militancy, the Finance Minister said while some relief could be given to those who had inadvertently committed excesses while performing their duty, those who had wilfully indulged in such acts should not be given any relief.

On the issue of river waters, he said his party was ready for a debate with the Congress over the issue in the Assembly itself.

The minister said an announcement regarding abolition of octroi was expected within days. He also said there was no proposal to lower the power tariff in the state.

Thane, August 27
A general strike called by the Shiv Sena brought life to a standstill in Thane district today with traffic off the roads and shops and businesses closed.

The strike, called in response to the death of the party’s Thane district chief Anand Dighe, 50, also affected train services of the Central Railway.

Two battalions of the Rapid Action Force and six battalions of the State Reserve Police Force were deployed in the district after the Sainiks went on a rampage following the death of Mr Dighe, who was injured in an accident on Saturday and died of a massive heart attack at a city hospital last night.

Mr Dighe’s funeral is likely to take place this evening.

Suburban train services between Diva and Kalyan stations were suspended for about 45 minutes in the morning. UNI
