CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE
Pervin Malhotra, Tribune’s career expert answers all your career queries.

Q Where can I study port management in India? I have five years of experience in the merchant navy.

Jimmy Nirula.

A. The National Institute of Port Management, East Coast Road, Uthandi, Chennai 600119. Ph: 044- 4491635. Website: http://education.vsnl.com/nipm offers training for Port and shipping personnel in South Asia

The institute is well equipped with infrastructural facilities like hostels and a library.

Q I’m keen on doing MCA after my graduation. Could you please tell me about the institutions offering MCA courses and also the job prospects?

Rajbir Grewal

A. With an MCA degree under your belt, you will have a choice of sporting any of the following job titles in software:

Analyst Programmer, Application Programmer, CAD Designer, CAD/CAM Technician, Computer Consultant, Computer Graphics Specialist, Web Developer, Web Master, Computer Operations Manager, Computer Security Analyst, Customer Engineer, Data Communications Specialist, Information Services Executive, Inspection Supervisor, Management Information Systems Analyst, Operations Research Analyst, Program Librarian, Regional Manager, Software Services Representative, Systems Analyst, Systems Design Specialist, Systems Development Manager, Systems Maintenance Analyst, Technical Services Manager, Technical Training Manager.

A majority of the above-mentioned jobs require competence in Systems Analysis. The SA is a professional problem solver who analyses the different sets of manual procedures in use in an organisation and replaces them with computerized processes.

MCA is offered at a large number of universities in the country. However, since the number of seats in each course is very limited, the competition is very stiff. For detailed information regarding the various MCA courses, eligibility criteria and job prospects in IT, you may refer to CARING’s Guide to Careers in Computers.

Q I would like to study law in the UK. Are all British law degrees recognised in India? Will I be able to practice here on completion of the course?

Nimrat Bewaja

A. The Bar Council of India is a statutory body formed by an Act of Parliament. It looks after the framing of the curriculum for professional law degrees (LLB) in India and also has the power to recognize foreign law degrees.

At present, the following UK law degrees are recognized by the BCI:

Leeds University-LLB.

Oxford University-BA (Law).

University of Birmingham-LLB.

University of Buckingham-LLB.

University of Cambridge-BA (Law). Website: www. law.com. ac.uk

w.cam.ac.uk; www. cam.ac.uk/ cambuniv/ugprospectus/applying/appl.html.

University of Hull-LLB.

University of Lancaster-LLB.

University of London-LLB.

Indian students who go for an LLB degree to UK directly after their class 12, are not allowed to practice as their degree is not recognised by the Bar Council.

Hence the only routes that seem viable for an Indian student are:

a) Complete your bachelor’s degree (in any subject) from India and then go to any of the institutions listed above which are recognised by the BCI.

b) Do your LLB from India and then go to UK for an LLM. BCI does not recognise LLM, as it is not a professional degree. LLM comes under the Association of Indian Universities.

Students, who have done their LLB from an UK institution that is not recognised by the Bar Council, can make a representation for the same. However, this is a time consuming process.

Q I have just completed my MBBS and would like to pursue a course in medical technology. Does any Institute in India offer such a course?

Dr Ruchir Sharma

A. The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has introduced a Masters Programme in Medical Science & Technology. This 3-year course imparts engineering skills to medical professionals and trains them for state-of-the-art medical research in the frontier areas of Biophysics, Biomechanics, Nutritional Science, Biomedical Simulation and Cryobiology etc.

Eligibility for admission is an MBBS degree (60% agg) with Mathematics at the +2 level. Selection is on the basis of an entrance test based on the MBBS syllabus and includes questions to test your general aptitude.

All the candidates admitted to the program are given an assistantship of Rs.10000/-p.m. However, you will have to work for 6-8 hours a week in the Institute hospital to be eligible for the assistantship.

The Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra offers MSc in Biomedical Instrumentation, while Jayachamarajan College of Engineering, Mysore offers MTech in Biomedical Instrumentation. The Coimbatore Institute of Technology, (Bharathiar Univ.) offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Instrumentation Technology.

Q I have completed BCom as a regular student and would like to pursue MCom through correspondence from H.P. University, Shimla. Will I have bright career prospects on completion of this course?

S.S Mann

A. MCom (Masters in Commerce) is a 2-yr postgraduate programme offered at almost all universities in India. The purview of the course is essentially academic and has hardly any professional overtones. It deals more with the theoretical aspects rather than the practical application of the topics under study.

Usually those who are interested in academics i.e. teaching and research take up the course. Research could be undertaken in fields of company law, organisational behaviour, human resources, market conditions, economics, accountancy etc. An obvious progression would be to do a MPhil followed by a PhD depending on the level of expertise desired. Although an MBA/CA are always open as career options only a handful of the students opt for these after MCom.

Jobs are available in schools and colleges as teachers (after BEd) and lecturers (after clearing NET). On completion of your PhD you might get a job as a field expert in a large corporate house.

Q My father is a property dealer and would like me to join him, now that I have completed graduation. Is there any formal course in Property Management?

Vipin Arora

A. Property transaction is a highly complex and competitive affair that involves a great deal of paper work and money. Therefore it is imperative to acquire specialised knowledge of the relevant laws and market operations.

NAREDCO in collaboration with Human Settlement Management Institute has devised a 1-month Certificate programme for real estate agent. The course covers real estate principles, property laws, finance, appraisal, brokerage and professional conduct. The fee is Rs. 6,500/- per participant.

Q I have done PGDIM from IGNOU and have been working in a state finance corporation for six years, but my career doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Any pointers?

H.S.Prakash

A. The most valuable pointer I can suggest is to first work out a written career plan for, say, the next 5 years, including your realistic yet ambitious goals, and with an honest assessment of your strengths and shortcomings. Without such a plan, it is impossible to successfully plan your career growth.

Once you have drawn up your 5-year career plan, you then have to assess the opportunities available for someone with your qualifications, skills and experience.

The third step is to then marry the two, namely your goals and the opportunities available.

Thus, for instance, considering your experience, you might wish to become a top-flight finance professional. In which case, you might like to consider a switch from nbfc to some other, faster-growing company in the financial services sector. Or, is it that the company you currently work for is not growing fast enough to provide you sufficient growth opportunities?

In a nutshell, work out your goals first, the action you need to take will then automatically be evident.

Please send in your query preferably on a postcard along with your name, complete address and academic qualifications to:
