NEW DELHI, Aug 15 
India marked the Independence Day on Wednesday with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee unfurling the petal-filled Indian tricolour from the soaring ramparts of the 17th-century Red Fort in the Indian capital, watched by millions on a live television broadcast.

13 killed in HP landslides
Shimla, August 14
At least 13 persons were killed due to landslides triggered by incessant rain in Himachal Pradesh today. Road and rail services were suspended at several places. Air services were also cancelled because of bad weather. At least 35 persons have died so far in the state in the current monsoon.

3 killed, 17 hurt in train blast
New Delhi, August 14
Three persons were killed and 17 injured in a bomb blast in a running passenger train at Murad Nagar railway station in Ghaziabad district at 3.40 p.m. today. The blast occurred in the rear coach of 372 Rishikesh-Hardwar- Delhi passenger train. 

Minister’s house attacked
Srinagar, August 14
Militants attacked with grenades the house of Minister of State for Tourism Sakina Itoo at Kulgam while a soldier was killed and another injured in a powerful blast at Bhatono Galal Marmat in Doda district overnight.

Three more join Farooq ministry

Three new Ministers of State were today inducted into the Jammu and Kashmir Council of Ministers. They are Mr Khalid Najib Suharwardhy, Syed Mushtaq Ahmed Shah Bukhari and Choudhry Mohammad Hussain. The Governor, Mr. Girish Chandra Saxena, administered them the oath of office and secrecy at a simple but impressive function at Raj Bhavan. The new ministers took oath in Urdu.

Kashmir solution must: Pak
Islamabad, August 14
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf today said India and Pakistan could not progress without finding an amicable solution to the Kashmir issue and cautioned his countrymen that threat to Pakistan’s unity and integrity emanated from extremist elements from within.

  • Fundamental mistake, historical blunder
    Pakistan and terrorism were born together
    “A fundamental mistake”. That was how Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, the greatest of India’s Muslim leaders, described the Partition of India on October 23, 1947. Many in both countries today agree that Partition was a historical blunder. The Mohajirs in Pakistan also say that it was a mad idea, it was the greatest blunder in history. (Edit page)

 

Siropa scam at Takht Kesgarh Sahib
Amritsar, August 14
After the purchase of a huge quantity of ration by the management of Takht Kesgarh Sahib from bogus dealers, a scam of purchase of siropas (robes of honour) has come to light. The order of siropas was given to a Jalandhar-based bogus cloth dealer. The four-member inquiry committee constituted by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee last year has called Dr Gurbachan Singh Bachan, Secretary, to explain his position on August 21 as to why tenders were opened in the absence of members of the Purchase Committee.
