Sinha allays fears on rupee fall
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 9
Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha today expressed confidence that the Indian rupee would continue to remain stable in the foreign exchange market despite the global credit rating agencies’ decision to downgrade the country’s local currency rating.

The RBI Governor, Dr Bimal Jalan, dismissed claims by a credit rating agency that India’s internal debt was growing fast and was high. “No internal debt crisis is there. I cannot comment on what they perceive. But I can tell you that as far as we are concerned the parameters are very good”.

With comfortable reserves of $ 43 billion there was no need to bother about the rupee. “Keep the idea of a possible falling rupee value out of your mind”, Mr Sinha told newspersons on the impact of the downgrading of local currency.

After SP downgraded India’s Mr Sinha felt the credit rating agencies were not always correct and referred to their failure to judge the East Asian crisis.
