Q I’m keen on pursuing a career in Event Management. Please give me some information.

Siddharth Oswal.

A Event management involves creating awareness and providing information to a large audience about a particular product or cause through musical nights, fashion shows seminars, consumer exhibitions, technical exhibitions or even an event that involves the participation of foreign companies. As a result, the information gets disseminated in a short time.

An event management firm has three main departments: technical, creative and marketing. Technical professionals handle the production of the event - lighting, acoustics, video, venue management and logistics, relevant permits etc. Venue management includes commissioning security personnel, managing the banquet area and hospitality.

While the marketing department comprises of sales and marketing people, management and advertising professionals, and graduates with a specialisation in communication.

The creative team conceptualises the event - the actual presentation and visual impact. A special theme is created for the event, which is then reflected in every piece of communication and display. A course or background in advertising would arm you with the necessary skills. Even commercial art graduates with some multimedia skills are suited for this department. In general, the minimum qualification required is graduation.

No Indian University offers a course in event management either at the undergraduate or postgraduate-level although the 2-year Master’s programme in Mass Communication at the Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication, Pune, provides training in organising seminars.

The National Institute of Event Management, 7, Avon Arcade, D J Rd, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai 400056 offers a 1-year Postgraduate Diploma in Event Management (on Sundays & holidays). The course covers event team leadership, event law, event accountancy, public relations, sponsorship, event marketing, logistics, etc.

In Delhi, you could check out the International Centre for Event Marketing & Management. E-mail: psinghal@ndf.vsnl.net.in.

Besides loads of creativity, what you essentially require to succeed in this field is excellent communication, networking, organisational, logistical, marketing and presentation skills, many of which you will acquire on the job.

According to a FICCI- Arthur Andersen survey, the live entertainment and event management segment is poised to grow rapidly from the present Rs.150 crore to a whopping Rs.1100 crore by 2005.

Q I am planning to enroll for a CA course. I have heard that the course is going to be revised. Is it true?

Gyan Bhalla

A Yes, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has designed a new syllabus to keep pace with the changing environment. The proposed course would comprise of 3 stages:

PE I (Presently called Foundation).

PE II (Presently called Intermediate).

Final.

Registration for Professional Education (PE I & PE II) starts from 1 October 2001. Only 5 attempts would be permitted for each stage. Two parallel Foundation and PE I Exams will be held in Nov 2002 and May 2003. If you have registered before 30 September 2001 you will have only 2 chances to appear in the Foundation Examination.

The 3-yrs Practical training will only commence, after you have cleared both groups of the PE II Exam.

Article clerks registered up to 30 September 2001 have an option to appear in the old or new scheme in Nov 2002.

If you have cleared your Foundation Exam before 1 October 2001 you will be eligible for the new scheme and commence your practical training without having to clear the PE II exams.

You must take the final exams in the last six months of practical training or thereafter.

Advancements in the field of IT would be incorporated in the new syllabus to make budding CAs IT friendly by introducing IT as a subject in PE-II. The successful completion of a computer-training program, prior to practical training will be essential.

After completing the practical training you would have to take a compulsory course on General Management & Communication skills before you can apply for membership of ICAI.

Q  I am doing BTech (Chemical) and want to do Masters in Environmental Engineering. Please tell me where this course is offered and what is its scope?

Pardeep Munjal

A Environmental engineers specialise in what’s known as either ‘clean’ or ‘dirty’ work. The profession’s clean arm does preventive work, investigating the potential causes of environmental damage and developing strategies to ward off pollution and other problems. While engineers who engage in dirty work are the ones who come to the rescue when environmental emergencies arise - e.g., donning protective gear to investigate first-hand why poisonous gas is seeping from underground pipes or containing oil and chemical spills.

Whichever kind of work you choose the demand for an environmental engineer is expected to increase in the near future. In the west, ‘dirty’ work, which is considered to be the most urgent environmental need, pays more than ‘clean’ work. Engineers specialising in hazardous waste command 25% more in salary than other engineers!

Environment engineers have excellent prospects in industry as well. The government has notified that any industry that employs over 500 people must have a Health & Safety Officer. Environmental Engineers are ideally suited for this task.

Environmental Engineering at the Masters level is offered at:

Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jamia Nagar, New Delhi 110025. Course: MTech (P/T). Eligibility: Diploma holders from a recognized technical Institute with 2 years experience. Selection: Admission test, practical experience, and interview Duration: 2½ years.

Q I have completed Class XII with above 80% and I wish to do engineering. But my parents are in no position to support me financially. Could you please tell me about educational loans available for students like me?

Paramjeet Duggal

A The Indian Banks Association (IBA) has formulated a comprehensive loan scheme that covers all courses in schools and colleges in India and abroad. Under this scheme, educational loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh are available for studies in India and up to Rs 15 lakh for studies abroad.

No collateral is stipulated for loans up to Rs 4 lakh. The interest does not exceed the prime lending rate (PRL). Interest levied on loans above this amount does not exceed PRL + 1 per cent.

You can avail of these loans not only for professional courses but also for self- financing academic courses like BCA or MIT, certificate and diploma courses of DOEACC as well as for those offered by foreign universities in India.

These loans are repayable over a period of 5-7 years with provision for a grace period.

The details of the scheme are available with the nationalised banks.Top

Why do we say that?
Worth his salt

Anybody ‘worth his salt’ is doing a good job, whether at work, as part of a team or in any situation where others rely on his efforts.

In Roman times, salt was considered vital for health and well-being, but often difficult to come by. So soldiers were actually paid partly in money and partly in salt. Later they were given an allowance so they could buy their salt themselves and this money was known by the Latin name ‘salarium’ — meaning ‘of salt’.

That is the origin of salary as the word meaning payment for work done. Asia FeaturesTop
