Bhopal, July 29
General Secretary of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Inder Prajapat today shot at and wounded another party General Secretary Manak Agarwal suspecting him to be behind a newspaper report about his (Prajapat) second marriage, a senior police official said.

Prajapat (42) went to Agarwal’s residence in posh Nishat Colony here and fired two bullets at him, and then rang up the police saying he had killed Agarwal (49) and was going to surrender, City Superintendent of Police Vivek Sharma said.

The victim was taken to Hamidia Hospital, where he was stated to be out of danger, Mr Sharma said.

An embarrassed state party leadership removed Prajapat from the post of General Secretary and also cancelled his primary membership of the Congress.

Mr Sharma said of the two bullets fired at Mr Agarwal one grazed past his chin and the other got lodged in his shoulder. It was removed after an operation, he added.

“In fact, the news of Mr Agarwal having survived may have come as a shock to Prajapat who told the police that he killed Agarwal,” the SP said adding Prajapat has been booked for attempt to murder.

Prajapat would soon be produced before a court, the SP said adding the incident was the result of a news item in a local daily yesterday about Prajapat’s second marriage to a dancer from Ujjain.

Mr Sharma said according to Prajapat the story had been published at the behest of Mr Agarwal and this led to the shooting. PTI
