Homage paid to Phoolan
New Delhi, July 26
Before the adjournment members of both Houses paid homage to the slain leader.
Lok Sabha Speaker, G.M.C. Balayogi said her life held mirror to the contemporary socio-political system.
She fought for the cause of the poor, the exploited, the downtrodden and the weaker sections of the society, he added.
No words were sufficient to condemn this senseless and cowardly act of violence which had cut short a budding political career, the Speaker said.
“We deeply mourn the loss of this friend”, Mr Balayogi said and conveyed condolences to members of the bereaved family.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Krishan Kant announced that the House was being adjourned as a mark of respect to the slain MP and to enable members to attend her funeral.
Just before Parliament met, the Lok Sabha Business Advisory Committee under the Speaker’s chairmanship decided to adjourn for the day.
Both Houses of Parliament separately observed one-minute silence for the departed soul before the adjournment.
Yesterday too, both Houses were adjourned soon after the news of the killing of Phoolan Devi was confirmed by Home Minister L.K. Advani.
This is a rare case in which an MP’s death culminated in adjournment of both the Houses for two consecutive days.
Her tragic end came around noon yesterday when three car-borne assailants waylaid her near the gate of her official residence, just 1 km away from Parliament House.
Phoolan Devi (38) had also represented Mirzapur in the eleventh Lok Sabha.
In her early days, she was subjected to caste-based social injustice which forced her to take revenge and arms.
Later, Phoolan Devi surrendered the arms before the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh.

Phoolan supporters go on
rampage New Delhi, July 26 The supporters, who had gathered at her residence from early morning, suddenly turned violent and raising slogans like “Rajnath hatyara hai” advanced towards his house nearby. The police said the mob stoned the house, ripped off the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s name-plate and went on the rampage, smashing window-panes of parked police and private vehicles.
The mob did not spare the vehicle of Mr Nitish Sengupta, an MP, who had come to pay homage there. The windscreen of his car was smashed.
Police personnel posted near the residence finally swung into action and dispersed the mob. The police said a case of rioting had been registered and efforts were being made to identify the culprits. |

Tragic end to a tragic life: Kapur
London, July 26 “I feel the shadow of the 1981 Behmai massacre has finally caught up with Phoolan Devi. There has always been a threat to her from that source. I’m just surprised that she didn’t have more security,” he said. Kapur, who also directed the Oscar-nominated film “Elizabeth”, said, “Just when it seemed she was finally getting her life together, it is sad that somebody has come and taken it away. Fiftytwo-year-old Kapur, who is currently editing a new film in London, said he first met Phoolan Devi in 1994 after he had finished filming “Bandit Queen” but before it was screened. They had remained friendly, despite their differences over the film. He said at first she backed the film at the Delhi Film Festival, then withdrew her support, only to change her mind again later. “I think Phoolan Devi was pulled in different directions, as happens when you suddenly become a celebrity and everyone wants to own you,”
the veteran film director said.
