QUERIES HOTLINE
Q I am studying in Class XI with non-medical subjects. I would like to sit for the NDA entrance. Could you please tell me in detail about the exam and the selection procedure? Kanwar Preet Singh. A You are eligible to take the National Defence Academy (NDA) exam provided you have passed Class XII and are below 18 1/2 years of age. With your science background you are eligible to join the Army, Navy or the Air Force on clearing the exam. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts this examination twice a year for admission of cadets to both the National Defence Academy, Pune, and the Naval Academy, Goa. Selection is made on the basis of this written exam and is followed by tests and interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB), and a medical exam. The written exam is held at examination centres all over the country and consists of two papers:
Paper-I: consists of arithmetic, mensuration, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics. The level is of Class X (matriculation). Paper-II: has two parts. Part A of 200 marks, tests the candidate’s understanding of English and covers grammar, comprehension, vocabulary and usage. Part B of 400 marks deals with General Knowledge and covers subjects such as physics, chemistry, general science, history & civics, geography and current events. All questions are in English and are of objective-type. Be on the look out for the advertisements published in Employment News and other leading national dailies usually in the months of April/May and October/November each year. Q Please give me information on Animation and Special Effects. Which are the institutes that offer courses in this field? Sonali Kumar. A India is truly set to witness a boom in the export of animation and digital special effects for Hollywood blockbusters. With production costs being a fourth of that in the US, India is fast emerging as a mega-base for outsourcing animation production from global studios such as Disney, & Cartoon Network. This is leading to skilled English-speaking Indian animation and design professionals, visualisers, ink-and-paint artists, compositors, scan-and-render artists, in-between artists, game developers, character developers and modeling artists to head westwards lured by attractive dollar salaries. PentaMedia, Crest Communications, Unilazer, Toonz Animation India Ltd., Magic Shop, Universal Studios, UTV Toons, Western Outdoor, Digital Canvas, ZICA, Shri Adhikari Brothers and Heart Animation, Hyderabad are some of the big players in India. Some of these are acquiring or partnering animation houses abroad. If you have loads of talent, i.e., if you have a flair for drawing, sketching or cartooning (if you have a bachelor’s in graphic/ applied/fine art), all you need is some professional training to handle the relevant animation and multimedia software like 3D Studio Max, Adobe After Effects and a good compositing software. You could check out the following institutes: ZICA Studios, Essel World, Gorai Island, Borivali (W), Mumbai 400091. Tel: 022-8684485/ 6704228. Course: Animation (1-yr). Heart Animation Academy: Annapurna Studios, Road # 2, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad-500033. Course: Multimedia. PIX Cell India Productions, S-176, G K-1, New Delhi-110048. Ph: 6422248, 6415821, and 6415836. Course :Animation. Burr Brown (I) Ltd. have recently announced a course in animation and special effects. The 3-mth course comes at a steep price of Rs 45000/-. Although the advertisement guarantees a job with the organisation as a (2D or 3D) Special Effects or Multimedia professional, in actuality there are several caveats. Contact: Manager HR, Usha Bhavan, A-41 Mohan Co-op Estate, Mathura Rd, New Delhi 110044. Ph: 6950191. Modi Entertainment Group has entered into a business alliance with the Vancouver Film School, US to set up professional training institutes in India. The first school in Mumbai will kick off with three full-time courses (10-11 mths) in 2D Classical Animation; 3D Animation; and New Media. While Class 12 is the minimum qualification, someone with an art school background would be ideal particularly for 2D. But these are fairly expensive courses, so do check them out before enrolling. Also insiders say that 2D animation has almost reached a plateau globally and is in a box-office slump. 3D animation is now the rage because it is much more realistic. The characters and objects can be made to have ‘real’ texture. So you would do well to focus on the latter. Q I am in third year of graduation and would like to take up a diploma course in journalism through correspondence. Is it possible to do this along with graduation? Please provide me names and addresses of universities offering the diploma. Gaurav Sharma A Yes, Gaurav you can do the following courses through correspondence along side your graduation. Soap opera Anybody who has never heard of J.R. Ewing or Alexis Carrington must have been living on a different planet lately. They are, of course, characters from TV soap operas which attract millions of viewers each week. The idea of serialised melodrama with a cliff-hanging finish to each episode is nothing new. They began in the United States when there were few television sets around and radio was at its popularity peak. At the time half a dozen or more serials were on the air each week. The link? They were nearly all sponsored by soap-makers. The phrase ‘soap opera’ was born.
