Distance education courses gain popularity Rohtak: Professional courses being run by universities in Haryana through the distance education mode appear to have gained popularity with the advent of the computer era. Encouraged by the response to these courses, particularly computer courses, these universities Maharshi Dayanand University, Kurukshetra University and Guru Jambheshwar University plan to introduce new courses to provide greater options to candidates. Although technically Maharshi Dayanand University is not introducing any new course from the current academic session, it started at least four new courses in January last. These courses are Advance P.G. Diploma in Computer Application (APGDCA), Advance Post-Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (APGDIT), M.Sc (Computer Science) and Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA). According to official sources there is great rush for admission to these four new courses though the other professional courses run by this university have not attracted much candidates. Over 10,000 admission forms (prospectus) have been sold though the last date of admission has been extended to July 31. Guru Jambheshwar University, though still facing teething problems, too, plans to start at least six new courses through distance education. The new courses proposed by it include M.A. in Insurance, P.G. Diploma in Environmental Management, P.G. Diploma in Website Content Development and Cyber Journalism, BCA, BISC, Advance Diploma in E-Commerce and Diploma in Emerging Areas of Science and Technology Management. Kurukshetra University, the oldest among the universities in Haryana, appears to be much ahead of Rohtak and the Guru Jambheshwar Universities in the field of launching the maximum course through distance education. The university is running at least 48 courses of one, two and three-year duration including professional courses in the field of computer, management, finance, marketing, tourism, hotelling, journalism, library and information science. Some of these courses are being conducted in collaboration with Hartron, a Government of Haryana undertaking, and Zee Interactive Learning System (ZILS). The Vice-Chancellor, Kurukshetra University, Mr R.S. Chaudhary, says the Directorate of Correspondence Courses of his university is the first in the country to have started two ‘OnLine’ courses of M.Sc Software and P.G. Diploma in Software in close coordination with ZILS. Kurukshetra University plans to introduce seven new courses from the 2001-02 academic session. These courses include PG Diploma in Business Laws and Practice, P.G. Diploma in Copyright, Patent and Cyber Laws, PG Diploma in Computer Teaching, PG Diploma in Computer Science (Software), M.Sc Computer Science (Software), Master of Mass Communication and MA/M.Sc Geography (2-year). Mr Chaudhary claims that his university is maintaining quality in distance education teaching. Timely supply of study material is ensured to the students. Apart from course material, which is now supplied in book form, books by eminent authors, revision papers and old question papers are supplied. He says the Directorate of Correspondence courses of Kurukshetra University proposes to construct its own block at the campus at a cost of over Rs 3 crore. It will have computer laboratories and open class-rooms for candidates of distance education. Mr Chaudhary says he plans to introduce P.G. Diploma in Computer Maintenance and Networking aimed at imparting training in computer repairs. Though it is believed that computer
courses have more employment potential, no university has conducted a
survey to find out as to how many students may have got jobs. |
CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE Q I have come across a number of ads issued by consultants who are recruiting candidates for training as airhostesses. Are these genuine? Prabhjot Kaur. A While it's true that at times placement consultants are appointed to conduct the initial selection of cabin crew on behalf of the Airlines (mainly foreign ones), not all of them are genuine. Beware of those that demand a fee in lieu of a job. Some of these are known to charge astronomical sums - in the region of 1 lakh and even more to get you a job in a "foreign" airline. That too in advance. Avoid them like the plague. Similarly, watch out for those who claim to train or groom you for selection. Most of these, barring a few, will simply take you for a ride. The actual fact is that airlines prefer to train candidates at their own centres and in their own style at their own cost (either in India or abroad, depending on where they originate). Also, when in doubt, do check-up with the Airline concerned to confirm whether they have indeed authorised the firm to recruit candidates on their behalf. Q I have cleared Class XII (PCM) this year and am keen on doing a course in Aeronautical Engineering. Please advise. Kuntal Baweja. A Aeronautical Engineering deals with the design, construction and maintenance of both commercial and military aircraft. A course in this branch of engineering encompasses a study of fluid dynamics, material science, structural analysis, propulsion and electronics. This course offers specialisation in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, propulsion, structures, celestial machines, acoustics and guidance and control systems. After 10+2 (PCM), you can take up a course in Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering at the following institutes: BE (4 years): Hindustan College of Engineering, Chennai (Univ of Madras). Eligibility: Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Maths or Vocational Stream (Engineering & Technology) or Diploma in Engineering or BSc (Applied Sc). BE (4 years): Park College of Engineering, Tirupur (Bharathiar Univ). Eligibility: 10+2 or equiv (acad/voc) with Physics, Chemistry, Math (70% agg). BE (4 years): Punjab Engineering College (Panjab Univ), Chandigarh 160012. Eligibility: 10+2 with English, Physics, Chemistry and Maths as subjects. Selection Procedure: Entrance test. Admission details for the others will be available from the concerned institutes. Associate Membership Exam of the Aeronautical Society of India. ASI conducts Associate Membership Examination twice a year. Sections A and B of this examination have been recognised by the Ministry of Education, at par with a Bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from an Indian university for purposes of recruitment to superior posts and services under the Central Government. Hence aeronautical engineering can be studied at this Society through correspondence. The exam consists of 3 parts - Studentship, Section A and Section B. The minimum educational qualification for appearing in the exam is a pass in Class X. Students who have cleared 10+2 with science subjects are eligible directly for Section A. For further information, you may contact the Aeronautical Society of India, 13-B, Indraprastha Estate, New Delhi 110002. Q I am a student of Class XI (medical) and wish to do BSc Nursing. Please provide information on the eligibility criteria, and the colleges that offer the course. Would it be a good career option to take up? Shaina Gupta. Q I have taken admission in BSc (Maths) in Chandigarh. (I had got a 95% in Maths in Class XII and a 97% in Class X). Could you please describe the prospects in this field as I am not too interested in entering the teaching line? Manisha Verma. A Career opportunities are wide and varied for those specialising in Mathematics. Moreover, the skills you develop while studying for a maths degree - such as the ability to think logically and methodically - are great assets in any profession. Some of the careers where a mathematical background is particularly valued are: Accountancy, actuarial work (insurance), taxation, management, software programming, finance, operations research, market research, and media planning. Another growth area lies in the banking and financial services sector where the work centres on portfolio management, financial control methods and forecasting. Those specialising in mathematics also work as members of research teams in industry, meteorology, information technology, aerospace, bioinformatics etc. Of course there is always the academics and competitive exams option to consider. Q I am going to complete my BCA in 2002 and am keen on doing a course in International Business from a prestigious institute. Could you please tell me about the courses offered by IIFT? Why do we say that?
The Jeep is, of course, the amazing four-wheel drive vehicle which is now popular all over the world. The vehicle was designed in the United States during World War II and listed by the army as a GP — general purpose — vehicle. The initials GP rapidly became the word ‘Jeep’. The army is also responsible for
another well-worn word in the trucking world, DERV — for use in a
