Lashkar attacks Army convoy
Major, jawan among 4 killed

Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) today said it carried out an attack on a military convoy in South Kashmir, killing a Major and a jawan and wounding 10 other security personnel.

An LeT spokesman said two militants called Abu Osama and Abu Badr took part in the attack on the Jammu-bound Army convoy at 9.30 a.m. at Mirbazar Khanabal in Anantnag district.

Official sources said three ITBP personnel were among the injured troops. One man and a woman also died in the crossfire.

The entire area has been cordoned off following the attack.

Elsewhere, at least five persons, including three foreign militants, were killed and three others injured in separate incidents of militancy in the Kashmir valley since yesterday.

Protest demonstrations were also held in Narabal area in protest against the arrest of a mother and her son by the security forces last evening.

Protests were also held near Budgam against the killing of a brick-kiln owner by unidentified gunmen, who had also looted Rs 50,000 from the brick-kiln owner.

Three foreign militants and an Army jawan were killed in an encounter in Machil sector of Kupwara. The militants have been identified as Rehmat-ulllah Khan from Kasoori, Pakistan, Abu Safar Payer from Muzaffarabad and Amir Khan from Multan, Pakistan. Three AK rifles, eight magazines, 574 rounds, 36 UBGL grenades, 7 RPG boosters, one wireless set and 120 detonators have been seized from the slain militants.

The police has found bullet-ridden body of Mohammad Yusuf Bimla of Kokernag in Anantnag district.

One civilian was injured when unidentified militants hurled a grenade on a security forces vehicle at Dalgate this morning.

Unidentified militants fired at and injured Abdul Hamid Malik, an ex-militant, at Siriwarapora, Pattan, in Baramula district during the last night.

Riyaz Ahmad Pir was shot at and injured by militants at Tangmarg in Baramula district.

JAMMU: At least five militants are said to have been killed in a fierce encounter with the men of the police and the Army at Bachawali village in the Surankot area of Poonch on Wednesday. Official sources said that on receipt of information, troops and police cordoned off the Bachawali forest where a large group of hardcore militants had set up a hideout.

According to these sources the security forces came under heavy fire in which two security personnel injured.
