2 PILs against Jaya disposed of

Chennai, June 29
The Madras High Court today disposed of two Public Interest Litigations (PIL) challenging the appointment of Ms Jayalalitha as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by the Governor.

Disposing of the PILs, the larger Bench, comprising Chief Justice N.K. Jain, Mr Justice K. Sampath and Mr Justice P. Thangavel, said in view of similar petitions pending before the Supreme Court, it would not be appropriate for this court to go into the merits of the case at this stage. However, the Bench gave liberty to the petitioners to move the apex court. UNI

Rajasthan told to include Jats in backward classes

New Delhi, June 29
The National Commission for Backward Classes has directed the Rajasthan government to include all Jats, irrespective of their religion, in the Central list of backward classes.

In a letter dated June 27 to the Rajasthan Chief Secretary, Mr Inderjit Khanna, the Commission said it had been brought to its notice that Jats subscribing to Sikhism were being discriminated against and issued backward classes certificates.

The Commission had resolved, the letter said, that all members of the Jat community, irrespective of their religious affiliations, were eligible for backward classes certificates.
