MLAs not allowed to enter Manipur Bhavan

New Delhi, June 22
The Manipur agitation against the extension of the Nagaland ceasefire to other states had its echo in the Capital today as students camping outside Manipur Bhavan here did not allow MLAs from the state to stay there.

“We have not been allowed to enter the bhavan and, therefore, we are staying at places which we would not like to disclose for reasons of our personal safety,” an MLA said on condition of anonymity.

The MLAs, who reached here during the past two days, are scheduled to meet Home Minister L. K. Advanir.

The students camping outside the bhavan were carrying on the agitation launched by the All-Manipur Students Union (AMSU) and other organisations who have threatened to intensify the agitation if the extension of the ceasefire with NSCN (IM) to Manipur was not withdrawn.

They announced a boycott of the MLAs and MPs as they had “ignored the sentiments of the people” by not resigning.

Meanwhile, a report from Imphal said the anti-ceasefire stir spread to the interior areas of Manipur today as the indefinite curfew in the three hill districts entered the fourth day after a few hours of relaxation while Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi demanded that the ceasefire agreement be made public claiming there might be some “motive” behind it.

The toll in Monday’s police firing, meanwhile, rose to 14 with a youth succumbing to his injuries as Manipur remained “tense” but calm today and people came out of their houses during the four-and-a-half-hour relaxation period on the fourth day of indefinite curfew, official sources said.

A 22-year-old youth, Th. Birendra Singh, wounded in the firing, died last night, the sources said.

Last evening, three persons, including a BSF jawan, were killed and two injured in an ambush by militants on a BSF convoy in the Terakhongshangbi area in Bishenpur district, police sources said, that adding some 28 persons were injured as angry BSF personnel allegedly vented their fury on passersby and beat them up.
