Army officer, 8 infiltrators killed

The security forces foiled a major infiltration bid in the Uri sector of Baramula district in north Kashmir in which eight infiltrators and a security force officer were killed last night.

A defence spokesman said troops at Lacchipora in the Uri sector challenged a group of infiltrators last night. An Army officer, Lieut Mahesh, was killed while another was injured in the exchange of fire that ensued. Till the last reports came in, the operation was in progress, the spokesman said. Three AK rifles, two pistols and a large quantity of arms and ammunition were seized from the site of the encounter.

This is the first major attempt of infiltration foiled by the security forces after the ceasefire was withdrawn. In another encounter at Warsum in the Trehgam area of Kupwara in north Kashmir, two militants were killed by the security forces. The spokesman said the security forces launched a search operation in the area following specific information about the presence of the militants. Two militants were killed in the exchange of fire. Two AK rifles and other arms and ammunition were seized.

An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Langote in Balakote of Poonch district of the Jammu region, the police said. One AK rifle, five magazines, 143 rounds, two hand grenades, two ruck- sacks, a pouch and Rs 545 of Pakistani currency were recovered.

Three persons were apprehended in separate incidents and a large quantity of arms and ammunition was also recovered. One person was injured in an attack by the militants in the Safapore area of Baramula district today.

JAMMU: Two foreign mercenaries were killed in an encounter while militants triggered a powerful blast at the Bannihal area of Doda district early on Tuesday but no loss of life or damage to property was reported, official sources have said.
