Fiscal
aid for CDSS projects needed DR K.N. PATHAK, present Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, in a bold step, has restored postgraduate teaching in Defence and Security Studies (DSS). National security think-tanks and the Security Studies Departments in universities are expected to play a significant role in disseminating the concept and responsibilities of national security among the general public, apart from providing backup to the national government in formulating security policies. In this respect the centre is supposed to come up to the expectations of the society in general and the student and defence security studies (CDSS) community in particular. The road ahead is not smooth, if not difficult. Similar departments in neighbouring universities have failed to project their identity. The authorities holding the charge of the CDSS at PU must ensure sound financial support for impending research projects. "There must be more co-operation and exchanges between colleges and universities engaged in national security teaching and research in India and abroad", commented former chief of the Army Staff Gen V.P. Malik, who is also Senator of Panjab University. He further said that investigation and study in national security must be promoted. Dr Harveer Sharma, former Professor and Head, department of DSS M.D. University, Rohtak, expressed happiness over the re-introduction of the subject and advised: "It is necessary to develop discipline through thrift and hard work". He stressed the need for team work to establish the identity of the centre. From now on, the university must select teachers with rich organisation and commanding abilities and create a new work style in the CDSS. Prof Pathak, who has gifted the CDSS
to the people of this border-state, has done a wonderful job. There is
every hope the people of this region and nation as a whole will be
benefited from CDSS. Definitely it will help in building a feeling of
national integration and nationalism. It will also generate interest
in the young students in joining the armed forces. |

Q Would a career as a horticulturist prove to be a fruitful one? Could you please suggest some universities that offer courses in horticulture? Gyan Prakash Sharma. A There are a wide range of opportunities open to a horticulturist. If you are keen on research after Ph.D. your options include joining a research institute in India, or the R&D department of a MNC, or going abroad. Alternatively you may take up a career in teaching. The Agricultural Research Service controlled by the ICAR also recruits horticulturists to work as agricultural scientists. Job opportunities in the field of amenity horticulture are provided by a large number of companies for decorative "greening" of their interiors and exteriors. Apart from the above you could start your own farm or nursery and can earn very well by selling its produce in the open market or exporting it. After 10+2 you could join the agricultural stream for a B.Sc. degree in agriculture or horticulture at an agricultural university/institute. You may then move on to do a M.Sc in horticulture. At the postgraduate level you have to choose from amongst the 4 horticultural streams— pomology, oericulture, floriculture and fruit preservation. This would be your specialization eventually. You may further go on to do PhD after M.Sc. However, I would like to point out here that a PhD is not required for each of the work opportunities mentioned above. Some of the institutes/universities offering graduate and/or postgraduate degrees in horticulture are: Birsa Agricultural University Kanke, Ranchi-834006, Bihar Haryana Agricultural University, Hissar-125004 Haryana. Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Solan-173230, Himachal Pradesh. University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore-560065, Karnataka University of Agricultural Sciences, Krishinagar, Dharwad-580005, Karnataka. College of Agriculture, Dapoli-415712, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Horticulture, Parbhani-431402. College of Agriculture, Faculty of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad-500030, AP. Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana-141004, Punjab. Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara, PO Trichur-680654, Kerala. Faculty of Horticulture, TNAU, Coimbatore-640003 College of Agriculture, Murtizapur road, Krishinagar, Akola-444104, Maharashtra. Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar-263145, Dist Nanital, U.P. College of Agriculture, Pune-411005, Maharashtra. College of Agriculture, Hebbal, Bangalore-560024, Karnataka. Agri-Horticultural Society of India, Alipore, Kolkata-700027, West Bengal. Postgraduate School, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi-110012. Q I have completed Class XII this year in the commerce stream. Could I go on to take up a job and do graduation side by side through correspondence? Please tell me what factors I should keep in mind while choosing a course. Also what are the considerations for selecting a coaching academy to prepare for UPSC exams? Sameer Sharma. A Increasingly, students have begun to opt for your kind of decision. In order to zero-in on the best course, you must go in for a recognised well-known university. Then check out its jurisdiction. Except the Central Universities and some others, most universities stipulate their own domicile requirements. Try first the university where you live. Also check out whether the university offers contact programmes in your city from time-to-time as these can be a great help. As far as the course is concerned, opt for an ‘honours’ degree instead of a ‘pass’ course if available in the subject of your choice. You could also refer to the Caring’s Guide to Correspondence & Part-time Courses, (Vision Books Pvt. Ltd., 24 Feroze Gandhi, Lajpat Nagar III, New Delhi 110024) for a comprehensive listing and details of recognised correspondence courses offered by universities and professional institutions in India. Before you select a coaching centre for UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exams, you must verify its track record: How many of their students have actually cleared the Prelims and the Mains and made it to the UPSC in the last 2-3 years? Also check out the faculty. Are they sufficiently experienced in this line? Talk to students studying there to get a clear picture. Then check out the fees. The most expensive need not necessarily be the best! Q Does a housekeeping job in a 5-star hotel involve menial work? Please give me details on what housekeeping is all about? Bela Singh. A No work is menial. As far as housekeeping is concerned, it is the backbone of a hotel. The housekeeping department is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the entire hotel. One of the first impressions a guest forms when he walks into a hotel is a reflection on the housekeeping department - how clean, spic-’n-span and well maintained the surroundings are. No hotel can function without this department because it oversees everything from guest rooms, public areas, laundry, linen, horticulture and flower arrangement, and maintenance housekeeping machinery which is now becoming increasingly high-tech. Earlier, considered a back-of-the-house operation, the perception of housekeeping has undergone a sea change. Now, not just managers and supervisors, but staff at all levels are being encouraged to interact with guests. Today even the houseman is trained to interact with the guest. Since the feedback he receives is first-hand, it helps the management to respond promptly to his requirements. This also helps update guest history more accurately. Multi-skilling is another trend that is being encouraged in good hotels. For instance, even though stocking up the mini-bar in the guest room is the Front Office or the Food & Beverage department’s duty, it is being delegated to housekeeping. In short, housekeeping staff is being moulded into guest service agents. Q As my father runs a medium-sized printing press in Chandigarh, he suggests I pursue a course in printing technology. Could you please tell me which universities in India or elsewhere offer such courses? Kanwal Bir Singh. A Your father is right. Printing technology has undergone a sea change in recent years with the introduction of computerised high-precision machinery. The wonderful thing is that much of the latest global technology is now easily available in India thanks to the welcome reduction in import duty. Presses like Thompson, Ajanta Offset and Tata Press now offer state-of-the-art high speed delivery and international quality. They are now recruiting students with bright academic records to man their operations. The following Indian universities offer a 4-yr BE/BTech in Printing Technology: Anna University, Sardar Patel Road, Guindy, Chennai 600025. Eligibility: Class XII (Acad/Voc) or equivalent with PCM/vocational subjects (70% agg and 60% marks in each subject or diploma-holders (60-70% agg) of State Board of Technical Education. Eligibility: Class XII (Academic/Vocational) or equivalent with PCM/vocational subjects securing 70% agg and 60% marks in each subject (pass marks for SC/ST; 60-65% for BC. BMS College of Engineering (Visveswaraiah Technological University), PB No. 1908, Bull Temple Road, Bangalore 560019. Eligibility: 2-yr PUC or equivalent with PCM (50% agg; 40% for SC/ST & Category I) and English. Jadavpur University, Fac. of Engineering & Technology, Kolkata 700032.
