DMK MLA arrested Chennai, May 17 The Vepery police, which had registered cases against him, arrested the MLA and lodged him in the Chintadripet station for some time before producing him before the Egmore Magistrate’s court. The arrest followed the rejection of Mr Ilamvazhuthi’s anticipatory bail application by a Principal Sessions Court yesterday. Four of his associates were arrested earlier this week. AIADMK-front candidate John Pandiyan and several of his associates were arrested on the charges of making attempts on the life of Mr Ilamvazhuthi and assaulting DMK partymen on the polling day. The Egmore XIV Magistrate court remanded Mr Ilamvazhuthi and Kandan, another accused in the case, to 15 days’ judicial custody. They were later taken to the Vellore Central Prison. Mr Ilamvazhuthi alleged in the court that the AIADMK Government had started its “vindictive” governance. Meanwhile, the Jayalalitha administration today replaced three key senior police officers considered close to the previous Karunanidhi government, and appointed a new Police Commissioner for Greater Chennai. Police Commissioner P.Kalimuthu, who enjoyed the confidence of Mr Karunanidhi and was dubbed as a DMK supporter, was given the unenviable post of the Additional Director General of Police, Social Justice, CID in the State Capital. Mr K. Muthukaruppan, IG of Police, Armed Police, was the new Police Commissioner, an official release said. Mr A. X. Alexander, Additional DGP (Special Operations and Civil Supplies) has been transferred and made Project Director of the state Police Academy. This is a newly-created post. Mr M. Balachandran, IG and Additional Commissioner, has been transferred. His new posting orders will be issued separately, the release added.
