New Delhi, April 30
An angry Congress today hit back at the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee saying that it was Mr Vajpayee and not the Congress who had lowered the prestige of the Parliament.

Rejecting Prime Minister’s remarks yesterday that he had not said “anything objectionable” to warrant outburst by the Leader of Opposition, senior party leader Oscar Fernandes said that Mr Vajpayee should have acted with dignity and wisdom.

Asked about Prime Minister’s remarks that several issues were coming where morality would not be one-sided, Mr Fernandes said the Congress would not be browbeaten and was willing to face any threat.

Accusing Mr Vajpayee of not fulfilling his overt assurance on the JPC probe in Tehelka issue, Mr Oscar Fernandes said: “they should first answer what they had done and then throw stones at others.”

Even as uncertainty prevailed over the appointment of the new CBI Director, Special Director P.C. Sharma today took charge from R.K. Raghavan, who retired from the premier investigating agency after a 27-month tenure.

With the government yet to officially announce the appointment of the new CBI chief, Mr Raghavan technically entrusted the reins of the agency to Mr Sharma, seniormost officer of the organisation.
