Studying IT from Indian perspective IT education is on the upswing despite a visible slowdown the world over. India despite having its own giants as Aptech and NIIT is also a witness to a new breed of IT education centres that are extension counters of some major colleges and universities from the developed world. The purpose — the conspicuous caliber of the Indian software professionals that is well-tested, to be given a simulator experience on the Indian turf and subsequently to be absorbed in their own respective countries. This means a careful grooming of a top-of-the-line product to the optimum level so that the end result is far effective. Canada has taken one such initiative by opening an extension campus of the Georgian College (Canada’s second largest Co-op institution) at SAS Nagar. Named the Canadian Institute of Computer Science and Technology, it is an institution run by Canadians. Even the Indian staff has been selected and trained by the Georgian College at Canada. The USP at this institute at SAS Nagar, too is on the lines of its counterpart at Canada. It is Co-op training that has proven its mettle in the developed world and as a concept has been introduced in India by the CICST. Co-operative education is about integration of education with real time-work experience and this is what sets the co-operative colleges apart from regular institutions. Though on the regional front, Panjab University and various other major institutions are opening up to industry by offering consultancy in multiple streams, but the edge here is the direct co-ordination and involvement of not only students but also faculty members who take on a different role outside the institute, the role of project managers ensuring the required delivery and systematic operation during the co-op period of the students. Besides, even the training is kept in synchronisation of the requirements of the industry. The first batch of the pass-outs of the first two semesters has been successfully placed for a period of four months with some major industries in the region. A log is maintained on the performance of each student going through this practical experience to clearly identify gray areas and scope of improvement. This is done in complete co-ordination with the employers and the faculty. The CICST in SAS Nagar offers Computer Programming Analyst course with an indepth study in System Analyses, Financial Accounting, Fundamentals of Communications, Visual Basic, System Design, Data Communication and Networking, Java Programming, OOPS, C++, Web Application Development, SQL, Delphi and Corporate Communications. A BBA course is being introduced. Emphasis is laid on overall personality development with a major thrust on intra-personnel skills. This Indian campus of the Georgian College is a unique combination of Indian ethics and the western analytical skills — especially in the stream of IT. The Georgian College at Canada offers a full range of programmes in Business and Computer Studies, Transportation Studies, Engineering Technology, General Studies, Design and Visual Arts, Health Sciences and Human Services, Hospitality and Tourism and postgraduate studies at the Canadian campus. |

Q Could you please suggest some universities offering LLM through correspondence? How important is it to do LLM to be a sucessful lawyer? Sarika Gupta. A As a rule, full-time courses are preferable to those offered through distance learning. However, if you are a practising lawyer who cannot take time out to attend a full-time course, or are opting for LLM because it will help you get promoted to a superior post, or you would like to study further to upgrade your professional knowledge or skills, the latter is a perfectly valid option. As long as a course (regular or distance) is offered by a UGC- affiliated university, it is fully recognised. The following universities offer LLM through correspondence: Mahatma Gandhi University, School of Distance Education, Collectorate Post Office, Kottayam 686002.Duration: 3 yrs. Eligibility: LLB/3 yrs work experience. Kakatiya University, School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education, Warangal 506009.Duration: 3 yrs. Eligibility: LLB. Kurukshetra University, Department of Distance Education, Kurukshetra 132119. Duration: 2 yrs. Eligibility: LLB (Professional) 50% (agg). Annamalai University, Directorate of Distance Education, Annamalainagar 608002. Course: Master of Law (ML). Duration: 3 yrs. Amity Law School, Amity Campus, M-Block, Saket, N.Delhi-110027 Duration: 1-yr (PT). Eligibility: LLB. There are 2 schools of thought on the question whether a LLM is important to be sucessful in the field of law. One school of thought considers a LLM not necessary at all for being a practising lawyer and considers it to be no precondition to a roaring law practice. However the other section feels that it gives depth and insight into the legal process and legal knowledge which LLB does not. If you intend to teach law or want to go in for research, LLM is a must. So its best for you to decide upon your future goals and whether you want study further after a LLB keeping those in mind. Q I am interested in becoming a newsreader on a television channel. Why do we say that? The wooden spinning top is one of the oldest of toys, an unlikely source of comparison with anyone who enjoys a deep sleep. But the people of medieval times were fascinated by the toy. They noticed that when it spun round fast enough, perfectly balanced on its point, the top appeared not to move. They joked the top was asleep. As far back as 1616, sound sleepers were therefore described as sleeping like a top. |
