Angry over denial of ticket to daughter

Thiruvananthapuram, April 7
Angry over the denial of tickets to his supporters, including his daughter Ms K. Padmaja, to the coming Assembly elections in Kerala, senior party leader K. Karunakaran, MP, today announced his decision to quit as permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee.

Devi Lal cremated
New Delhi, April 7
The mortal remains of former Deputy Prime Minister and former Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr Devi Lal were consigned to the flames with full state honours at Kisan Ghat here in the presence of a host of leaders including Vice-President Krishan Kant, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Home Minister L.K. Advani.

Sanctions against India to continue: USA
Washington, April 7
The USA has said the post-Pokhran sanctions imposed on India will continue though it sought New Delhi’s views on the issue when the External Affairs Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, met the Secretary of State, Mr Colin Powell, yesterday.

Indo-US pacts on defence cooperation

Putting behind post-Pokhran chill in defence ties, India and the USA have reached agreements on defence cooperation during the talks External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh had with US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Cong, Trinamool agreement on seats
Kolkata, April 7
Ending the five-day-long stalemate over the allocation of 18 Assembly seats, the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TC) finally sewed up an agreement today on all 294 seats in West Bengal, as TC chief Mamata Banerjee charged the BJP with “belittling and abusing her” instead of fighting the CPM-led ruling Left Front.

The government fully geared itself to face the Opposition parties in Parliament on the stock market crisis with market regulator SEBI Chairman D.R. Mehta assuring it that the interim inquiry report will be submitted by April 15, a day before Parliament reopens after recess.

Karnataka PCC chief quits
New Delhi, April 7
In a virtual repeat of the Tehelka episode, Karnataka PCC President V.S. Koujalagi, accused of accepting bribe from a youth to show him a favour and allegedly caught on video tapes during the act, resigned from his post today.

Charges against VC to be probed

Punjab Higher Education Minister Master Mohan Lal today said he had directed the Secretary, Higher Education, to hold an inquiry into the allegations of violation of university rules and other irregularities levelled by the Punjabi University Teachers Association against the University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia.

Despite a large turnout, the rally organised to mark the three years of the Dhumal government, here today turned out to be a low-key affair due to the cancellation of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s programme at the last minute. Mr Vajpayee, who was scheduled to address the rally, could not make it to Hamirpur due to the demise of Mr Devi Lal.
