queries hotline Q I am an unemployed graduate belonging to a farming background. I have heard that bee-keeping and mushroom cultivation can be lucrative propositions. Where can I get the know-how and assistance to set-up these ventures? Amrik Singh A The Punjab Government’s D/o Industries & Commerce, Rural Employment Generation Programme of the Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC), SCO No. 3003-04, Sector-22-D, Chandigarh, offers a golden opportunity for young people like you who wish to set up their own village industries by offering loans, subsidies and attractive margin-money schemes through nationalised and Grameen Banks. KVIC also offers the initial kit etc. for setting up the apiary. The National Research Centre for Mushroom (ICAR), Chambaghat, Solan 173213 (HP) offers a 10-day workshop on Mushroom Production Technology for Entrepreneurs. The course covers cultivation of white button and speciality mushrooms including spawn production, compost production, casing, crop management, processing, project formulation, economic aspects of mushroom cultivation etc. The course fee is Rs. 2500/- and selected candidates have to make their own arrangements for boarding and lodging. For details regarding the next session starting 16 April, contact the Director, Tel: 01792-30451, 30767. E-mail: rnverma@nde.vsnl.net.in Taking into account that India’s mushroom cultivation has recorded an annual growth of over 40%, IGNOU has also launched a vocational programme through distance learning. The instructional package comprises printed self-study material, supported by TV and audio programmes as well as guidance from mushroom experts and growers. Q What does it take to become a medical transcriptionist? Bachittar Singh A Any graduate with excellent command of English and a decent level of comfort with the American accent can go in for medical transcription. In a nutshell, the work involves meticulously transcribing digitised audio data dictated by the doctor into formatted computerised text. MT calls for excellent listening skills, familiarity with medical terminology, high degree of concentration and accuracy. A virtual industry has sprung up to cash in on the demand by offering courses for a handsome fee. Do some comparative shopping before you sign up for such training schools. Make sure they promise you placement at the end of the course. Preferably choose one that runs a MT operation of its own. Starting packages are in the range of Rs. 5,000/- plus incentives. After a while you can move on to becoming a content editor or project leader. Q I am interested in studying Actuarial Science. Could you please suggest some recognised courses and job prospects in this field? Pooja Arora A The Global insurance sector is all set to boom in the coming years after having been thrown open to private companies. The first batches of licences have already been issued to joint ventures with international players and several others have been granted clearance for registration "in principle". Anticipating the manifold spurt in demand for trained insurance professionals both for the insurance and brokerage firms as well as their intermediaries, IRDA has given the green signal for setting up 14 institutes mainly in the South and East to begin with, for training insurance agents. To inject a fresh dose of professionalism, IRDA has also stipulated that all new agents will have to clear the exam conducted by the Insurance Institute of India, which was earlier being conducted by the insurance companies themselves. Foreign players eager to bring in their courses to India will also impart international degrees. To equip yourself for a career in this field, you could consider the following courses: India Insurance Business School, B 294, Sector 20, NOIDA 201301. Ph: 914553374, 914536610. How do I go about it? What if I get less than 50% marks in my graduation? Kohin Kapoor A The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), New Delhi, conducts a series of courses and examinations (Foundation, Intermediate and Final) to enable you to qualify as a Chartered Accountant (CA). ICAI is the only institute in the country conducting the CA course along with its regional offices located at Chennai, Calcutta, Kanpur and Mumbai. Postal tuition is provided for each of the courses and the exams are held twice a year at several centres across the country and abroad. If you wish to enrol for the course, you can take either of the two routes: after completing 10+2 or after graduation. Foundation Course: Your training for Chartered Accountancy can begin as soon as you finish school (10+2). For this you need to enrol for the 10-month Foundation Course which is a gateway leading to the 3-year course in Chartered Accountancy. This pre-professional course which comprises four subjects can be done either by correspondence or through contact classes wherever available. On clearing the Foundation Exam, you can register for the Intermediate Exam. Direct Entry: Alternatively, you can do the course after your graduation. Certain categories of Commerce as well as non-Commerce graduates with the requisite percentage of marks (50% for the former and 60% for the latter, if they have maths as a subject; and 55% for those who have subjects other than Maths) are exempted from appearing for the Foundation Exams. They can directly register for the CA course. If by chance you do not score 50% agg in BCom, then the only alternative route to entering this profession is via the Foundation Course route. The main Chartered Accountancy course consists of Intermediate Exam, Practical Training and the Final Exam. For further information, you may contact: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Indraprastha Marg, New Delhi 110002. If you do not get 50% agg in BCom, then the only alternative route to entering this profession is via the Foundation Course route. Q What does it take to become a medical transcriptionist?
