New Delhi, March 13
The BJP President, Mr Bangaru Laxman, tonight resigned from the post following the exposure of his alleged involvement in a defence deal by a website, even as Defence Minister George Fernandes offered to resign from the Cabinet. However, Mr Fernandes was persuaded by his Cabinet colleagues not to take any hasty decision.

Claiming that the Tehelka.com had produced incontrovertible evidence about the involvement of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, his Principal Secretary Brajesh Mishra, Defence Minister George Fernandes, Samata Party President Jaya Jaitley and many respectable members of Sangh Parivar in a defence deal, the Congress said today that the senior government functionaries had no moral right to continue in office.

Stock markets record new lows

Stock markets across the country rocked violently, plunging share prices to new lows and the BSE 30-share index by a whopping 227.24 points. In what came to be described as a “Black Tuesday”, the Bombay sensex saw a sharp slide of 320 points at one point, bounced back with the same vigour before going down to settle at 3540.65 points at the end of the day.

Volatile trading and panic characterized Tuesday’s ‘Tehelka’ trading session. The bell-weather BSE Sensex touched a new 22-month low by mid-day, then recovered dramatically a little later before collapsing again.

21 Oppn MLAs suspended
Chandigarh, march 13
The Punjab Vidhan Sabha today created history of sorts when a resolution was moved to “suspend” 21 MLAs for the remaining part of the Budget session. The suspended MLAs comprise 13 Congressmen, one each of the BSP and the SAD (Amritsar), two of the CPI and four “unattached” Akali members, who otherwise owe allegiance to the breakaway faction of Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra.

Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee has ordered a probe into the alleged burning of a copy of the holy Koran here last week, official sources said. This was conveyed to the top leaders of Muslim religious and political organisations when they met the Prime Minister here today demanding stringent action against those indulging in the act.
