Q I would like to pursue an MBA degree abroad but lack the required funds. Could you please tell me if there are any educational loans for students offered by Indian banks for management studies in India and abroad?

Maninder Dhindsa.

A Cheer up, here’s some great news for you and many others like you who were deterred by the high cost of professional education. Increasingly, degrees like MBA or MIT in India, and far more so abroad had priced themselves beyond the reach of most deserving students. Under the new budget unveiled by the FM, the Indian Banks Association (IBA) has formulated a comprehensive loan scheme that would cover all courses in schools and colleges in India and abroad. Under this new scheme, educational loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh would be available for studies in India and up to Rs 15 lakh for studies abroad.

No collateral would be stipulated for loans upto Rs 4 lakh. The interest would not exceed the prime lending rate (PRL). Interest levied on loans above this amount would be 1 per cent higher than the PRL. The loans are repayable over a period of 5-7 years with provision for a grace period.

For further information on these educational loans, you may directly contact the banks and the Student Welfare Wing of your university. Besides these, scholarships and loans are given by various universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC), several private organisations, trusts and foundations for needy and meritorious students.

Q I am interested in becoming an air-hostess. Can you please tell me how to go about it?

Priyanka Sharma.

A Apart from being well groomed and graceful, an AirHostess needs to be alert, courteous, patient and good humoured. You must enjoy being with people. Adaptability to flexible and unstructured work timings plus physical stamina to withstand long hauls are vital. It helps to be soft-spoken, caring and responsible with the ability to stay unruffled in a crisis. You must be unmarried and below the age of 25 years. You can send in your application to various airlines for the job of an AirHostess though most of them prefer graduates or diploma holders in hotel management/catering. Airlines insist on stamina and physical fitness, a clear complexion, pleasing personality, height: preferably between 154 cm to 170 cm (barefoot), weight: in proportion to height and normal .

While proficiency in English and Hindi are essential, familiarity with a foreign language is desirable. Knowledge of nursing/first aid and overall general awareness are an asset. Most airlines advertise for vacancies specifying the desired educational qualifications, extra-curricular activities and physical criteria. Short-listed candidates are called for a written test and interview. While government carriers only scrutinise applications after they call for them, interested candidates can also apply on their own to private airlines. During the selection process, an objective-type written test with multiple-choice questions evaluates general awareness and proficiency in language usage, mental ability and other areas followed by interviews and group discussions of the situational- analysis type. In Indian Airlines, selected candidates are further subjected to three flight observation tests to ascertain their tendency towards airsickness etc. Though your computer skills may not be necessary in your job as an AirHostess, they remain an added asset for you when later on in your Career you are absorbed in the ground jobs of the airlines.

Why do we say that?

Busman’s holiday

A person who goes on a busman’s holiday spends his own free time doing the same thing as he does when at work. The saying has a very sentimental origin. In the days when buses were pulled by horses, it was not unusual for drivers to spend their off-duty time travelling as passengers on their own bus. That way they could make sure the relief driver was treating the horse well.

Changes in technical education mooted

NEW DELHI: Upgradable learning modules have been suggested as part of structural changes in the technical education programme in the country.

According to a study conducted under the Department of Science and Technology, both teachers and students need continually upgradable learning modules.

If necessary, learner-centres multi-media programme should also be included, says the National Science and Technology Management Information System, which conducted the study.

The study has suggested a more flexible three-domain modular education programme in the formal sector. For meeting industrial needs, it has suggested development of an application skill learning module in collaboration with top academic institutions and the industry.

The country has production factor advantage in its large reserve of highly trainable, English-speaking manpower, the study says. A large domestic market should also be used.

Human resource development should be streamlined in such a way that the output from educational training becomes useful inputs for development of information technology infrastructure, it says.

The study has suggested implementation of the new model in some select industrial units and academic institutions. (UNI)
