Fiji’s interim govt set to quit

Suva, March 7
Fiji’s interim government, installed by the military after last year’s coup, has tendered its resignation after being declared illegal by the Pacific nation’s highest court, senior Cabinet sources said today.

The sources said President Josefa Iloilo had asked the government to put its move on hold until after a meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs tomorrow.

The meeting of the chiefs, which was expected to be held on Friday, would decide whether Fiji moved straight to general elections or whether a government of national unity was formed.

The interim government’s Attorney General, Mr Alipate Getaki, had earlier said members of the interim government had concluded that their position was untenable after last week’s ruling.

“We have to step down because the Appeals Court declared the interim government illegal,” he told AFP.
