Queries Hotline Q I am studying BTech (Electronics) and am interested in doing postgraduation in technology or management from a foreign university. Can you please tell me if I will also have to take GATE besides appearing for TOEFL? Sudhir Bhasin A GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores are not required for admission to postgraduate courses abroad. For seeking admission into an MS or MTech course, you need to take the GRE, particularly if seeking financial aid for studying in the US. For MBA courses in the US, GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) scores are necessary. However, for Canada, UK and Australia, the marks you have scored here and TOEFL/IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) scores would generally suffice. Admission to postgraduate courses in these countries is mainly based on academic merit. The good B-Schools require at least 2-3 years of work experience over and above good GMAT scores. However, do check out the specific requirements of the course for which you wish to enrol on the institution’s website. Q I wish to do a course in the repair and maintenance of farm equipment. Could you please tell me where such courses are held? Balvinder Sandhu A The Northern Region Farm Machinery Training & Testing Institute, Hisar 125001, conducts the following courses: * Course: TRYSEM (regular course). To acquire sponsorship for this course, one has to contact the district authorities of the Haryana State Govt. Duration: 12 weeks. Eligibility: Rural youth. * Course: Educational Training on Farm Machinery. Duration: 4 weeks. Eligibility: Diploma in Agricultural Engineering. * Course: Farm Machinery Utilisation and Maintenance. Duration: 2 months. Eligibility: Rural youth. Knowledge of Hindi/English is desirable. Age: 18-40 years. * Course: Intensive course in Special Machines & Skills. Duration: 1-4 weeks. No tuition fee is charged for the above-mentioned courses. Also, lodging facility is provided free of cost.
Q I am a final year student of BE (Electronics) What is an MBA in IT or Computer Aided Management? Should I opt for it? Inderpreet Dhol A Not so long ago, technology used to be a tool for business strategy. In the last five years however, technology has become a driver of business strategy. Corporate requirements are now shifting beyond hiring traditional management graduates to those who combine management acumen with expertise in technology and related fields. For instance, the Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Aided Management (PGDCM) offered by IIM-C focuses on the key areas of technology application, such as Problem Solving, Application Design for Business Processes, Data Management Techniques, over and above the conventional mainstream courses in Marketing, Finance, Operations and Human Resources. Students of this programme have notched fabulous placements this year. Understandably, students opting for these courses require a greater degree of analytical and mathematical skills compared to those enrolling for the regular MBA. An electronics graduate with a BE in electronics from a decent engineering college would be ideally suited for this contemporary course. Q I wish to become a Commercial Pilot. Could you please help me in realising my ambition? Pratap Mann A In order to become a pilot, you will have to acquire three licences: the Student Pilot Licence (SPL) which is similar to a learner’s licence for driving a car, followed by a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) before obtaining the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). The Ministry of Civil Aviation on qualifying the exams and clocking the prescribed flying experience issues these licences. For acquiring an SPL, the eligibility is 16 years of age and 10+2 (PCM). You will be required to take an objective-type entrance test for evaluating your general awareness, reasoning power and analytical abilities. A medical examination follows. This is not a major hurdle unless you have some serious ailment or handicap. Those with eye defects (myopia, hypermetropia, etc.) are advised to always wear spectacles and keep an extra pair on standby. The second step is qualifying for the Private Pilot Licence (PPL). This involves appearing for theory papers conducted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on air navigation, aviation meteorology, air regulation and technical aspects. The curriculum is designed to give you overall knowledge of the body of the aircraft, principles and rules of flying, airspeed and cockpit instrumentation, including know-how about a particular type of aircraft - Piper, Cessna, Pushpak, etc. For PPL, it’s mandatory to acquire 60 hours of flying experience of which 20 should be solo flying. Alongside, the student must also apply for the radio and telephone-operating licence issued by the Ministry of Communications that equips one with the knowledge of radio language and specific commands. To obtain a CPL, a PPL-holder has to clear theory papers on the same five topics but at a more advanced level. As a PPL-holder, you must have 250 hours of flying experience in the course of which you should have packed in solo flying, cross-country flying and day and night landing. The minimum age for joining a flying club is 16 years for SPL and 18 years for CPL. A commercial pilot becomes a senior commercial pilot upon upgrading his flying hours and finally, after clocking 1,000 hours of flying experience, he qualifies for the ALTP or Airline Pilot Licence. A word of caution: Training to be a pilot can be an expensive proposition. Although commercial pilots are paid handsomely. you must be initially prepared for the exorbitant cost of training, anywhere between Rs. 4-10 lakh, or even more, depending on whether you study in India or abroad. Also, you need to be absolutely fit at every stage. You will not only have to clear an exacting medical examination at the time of entry but also every 6-12 months throughout your career. Please send in your query preferably on a postcard along with your name, complete address and academic qualifications to: Editor, Career Hotline, The Tribune, Sector 29, Chandigarh. |

Why do
we say that? At some point or other we have all been warned against buying ‘a pig in a poke’, namely an item to be taken on trust without the right of inspection. Back in Saxon times, a suckling pig
would be taken to market and sold in a sack, or poke. However, some
shady characters would substitute a cat for a pig in the poke and
cheat the unsuspecting buyer on his purchase. |
