GND University honours H.S. Wasir, Sachar

The 27th annual convocation of Guru Nanak Dev University started here with an address by Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers.

Addressing the gathering the minister said Punjab was facing numerous social, economic and political problems.  “In such times it becomes imperative to ‘beat’ the new challenges with new technology.” The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr H.S. Soch, who presided over the convocation conferred the degree of Doctor of Pholosophy (honoris causa) under the faculty on law upon Justice Rajinder Sachar for his contribution to legal profession and particularly

in the field of protection of human rights and the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) under the faculty of medical sciences upon Dr H.S. Wasir for his contribution to medical science and particularly to the management of heart diseases.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr H.S. Soch, who presided over the convocation conferred the degree of Doctor of Pholosophy (honoris causa) under the faculty on law upon Justice Rajinder Sachar for his contribution to legal profession and particularly in the field of protection of human rights and the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) under the faculty of medical sciences upon Dr H.S. Wasir for his contribution to medical science and particularly to the management of heart diseases. Mr Malkit Singh was honoured with a gold medal for his contributions in the field of Punjabi folk-singing and music.

Mr Dhindsa appealed the awardees to keep an intent track of the tidings of the new century, especially, in the field of information and technology. He said we had seen tremendous development in the field of technology and it had caused equally alarming changes at the global level.

Ms Manjit Kaur of DAV College, Jalandhar, received four gold medals — Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir Annual Award, Sardar Isher Singh Attari Memorial Gold Medal, Bhai Vir Singh Medal and Sardar Bahadur Sardar Bhai Jodh Singh Medal for securing first position in MA (Punjabi) examination held in April 2000.

Ravnit Singh Kahlon Memorial Medal was awarded to Mr Rahul Behl of the Electronics Technology Department of the university for securing highest marks in major project in B.Tech (electronics) examination held in April, 2000. Mr Mandeep Kukreja of Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, Amritsar, received Colgate Medal for getting highest marks in pedonesia and preventive dentistry in BDS examination in May 1999.

The Medal of Institute of Chartered Accountant of India went to Ms Shifali Sharma of Senior Government College for Women, Amritsar, for obtaining highest marks in third and fourth papers in B.Com. examination in April 2000.

S. Sampuran Singh Memorial Medal was presented to Ms Monica Sharma of DAV College, Jalandhar, for standing first in MA (Political Science) in April, 2000. Ms Shaila Garg of the Law Department of the university got Shrimati Balbir Valha Memorial Medal for topping LL.B examinations in April, 2000. Ms Hema Saini of the Library and Information Science Department was awarded Shrimati Satinder Kaur Memorial Medal for standing first in B.Lib. and Inf Sc examination in April, 2000.

Mr Jaskaran Singh of the Guru Nanak Studies Department was honoured with Baba Ganda Singh Chatiwind Memorial Medal for standing first in MA (religious studies) examination held in April, 2000, and Late Shri Shyam Sunder Nayyar Memorial Trophy was awarded to Ms Rajni Nanda of the Chemistry department of the university for topping in M.Sc. (honours school) in chemistry examination held in April, 2000.

Justice Rajinder Sachar and Dr H.S. Wasir thanked the university for the honour of conferring doctorate degrees on them.Back
