Using rice husk ash to grow banana trees Karnal, February 22 Chaman Lal Setia Exports Ltd has effectively used waste water and rice husk ash for agricultural purpose and as a water treatment plant. The company by using the two pollutants has been able to grow banana trees. Mr Vijay Setia, Director of the firm, said today that the proper use of the pollutants in a right combination could nullify their hazardous characteristics. He maintained that waste water discharged after parboiling is rich in starch because of leaching of rice in water. But when it is discharged in a proper system using rice husk ash, it could be of greater economic value. He said this system was suitable only for waste water discharged from a parboiling rice plant. The ground water of the area concerned could be recharged. He said that his company had been using this technology for the past three to four years. A committee was also formed by the Deputy Commissioner comprising scientist from the local Horticulture Department to prove the efficacy of this technique. He claimed that the committee had fully endorsed this technique. There are 1,50,000 modern rice mills in India out of which 50 per cent are parboiling units. India produced 130 metric tons of paddy out of which 50 was used for parboiling. An equal amount of water was required for steaming and parboiling of rice. This amount of water required to be treated to prevent pollution needs crores of rupees. Similarly, it was difficult to dispose of large quantity of rice hush ash. |
