IN the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that rocked Gujarat on January 26, a lot of interest has been generated in the technical details of the tremors. Why do earthquakes occur and can they be predicted? How does one measure the magnitude of tremors? Such questions preoccupy the minds of one and all even as the country struggles to come to grips with the Gujarat disaster.
