Quake after-effects jolt Gujarat Govt
AHMEDABAD, Feb 2 — The colossal upheaval and the enormity of death and destruction caused by the earthquake on the morning of January 26 is slowly but surely beginning to hit the Keshubhai Patel government, albeit a week after the catastrophe.

All-party meeting today
NEW DELHI, Feb 2 — Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has convened an all-party meeting here tomorrow to discuss the earthquake relief and rehabilitation work being undertaken in Gujarat.

Threat of epidemic looms large
BHUJ, Feb 2 — With makeshift hospitals in the quake-affected areas reporting a steady increase in the number of gastroenteritis and diarrhoea cases, the fear of epidemic spreading in the region looms large. Doctors in Bhuj, Bachau, Rapar and other affected areas, where The Tribune team visited, stated that the number of such cases were increasing day by day.

Surcharge just the beginning
Fresh dose of taxes to follow: PM
NEW DELHI, Feb 2 — The imposition of 2 per cent 'earthquake' surcharge on income tax and corporate tax is likely to be followed by a fresh dose of moderate taxes, the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, indicated here today.

Musharraf phones Vajpayee
NEW DELHI, Feb 2 — There was an apparent thaw in the Indo-Pakistan ties when Pakistan Chief Executive Gen Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Atal Behari today spoke to each other on telephone, sharing their grief on the Gujarat quake tragedy.

Karmapa ‘granted’ refugee status
DHARAMSALA, Feb 2 — The 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorjee’s ordeal of being labelled as an illegal immigrant in India has finally come to an end, with the Indian Government reportedly granting him refugee status and lifting all restrictions imposed on his free movement.

Kandla shadow on region’s industry
HISAR, Feb 2 — Industrial activity in the region is slowly grinding to a halt due to the unavailability of raw materials following the closure of the Kandla port in Gujarat because of extensive damage by the earthquake. This may lead to a shortage of edible oils in the region in the next few days.

HPSC ex-chief told to give up
CHANDIGARH, Feb 2 — A Division Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Mr Justice K. T. Thomas and Mr Justice R. P. Sethi has directed Mr L. D. Kataria, erstwhile Chairman of the Haryana Public Service Commission, to surrender before the Vigilance Officer, Police Station, Rohtak, on February 7 at 8 a.m. for custodial interrogation, after setting aside the bail granted to him by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
