CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE
Can one avoid ‘stating the salary expected and at present drawn’ in the covering letter?

Q I am interested in modelling as a career. How do I go about it?

Baljit Singh, Ludhiana

A Modelling offers a glamorous but short-lived career which involves much hard work. It is a profession where educational qualifications are relatively insignificant and physical attributes and personal qualities assume importance. Good models are very well-paid and can make a fortune within a few years besides acquiring a celebrity status. They are also in great demand to compere live shows and anchor TV shows.

Your decision to go in for modelling as a career should be based on an objective and realistic self-assessment.

Depending on the assignments you get and what you enjoy doing, you can choose between ramp or live modelling; photographic (fashion) modelling or modelling for press advertisements or TV commercials. Modelling for different media calls for different attributes. While a photogenic face is essential for the print media, TV commercials require some acting skills and ramp modelling calls for stage presence, poise and a tall, slim figure to show-off the clothes to perfection.

Personality Traits/Physical Attributes

* Besides oodles of self-confidence and tenacity, it helps to have a glowing complexion and lustrous hair and photogenic features. Most of the top female models are tall - over 5 ft 6 inches (a must for ramp modelling) and very slim.

* The ability to keep smiling and remain calm while appearing poised and interested even in a boring and back-breaking work schedule coupled with a highly disciplined lifestyle (regular exercise, sleep and diet) are the essentials you will have to master in this profession.

Before you start looking for work, have a professionally shot portfolio of your pictures ready. Select two or three of the most flattering pics (profile, close-up and full-length) and have a set of copies made for handing over to fashion houses, advertising and modelling agencies, top fashion photographers, etc. Don’t stint on this investment. It is your calling card for fetching you that much needed first assignment!

Pervin Malhotra, Tribune’s career expert answers all your career queries.

Q When answering a recruitment ad that asks applicants to state the ‘salary expected and at present drawn’, can one avoid doing so in the covering letter without jeopardising one’s chances of being considered for the job?

Suresh, Jalandhar

A There is an old Chinese proverb which says "To guess is cheap. To guess wrong is expensive". In practical terms, listing salary information at the very outset in your covering letter weakens your bargaining position. While a figure too low would devalue your abilities, one too high may outprice you for the job. The safest rule while responding to a premature request for such information would be to simply stall mentioning any figures till you actually get the job offer. After that, just play it by ear.

I personally doubt if any interviewer would reject your application merely because this particular piece of information is lacking in an otherwise complete and impressive resume.

Why do we say that?
Born with a silver spoon in his mouth

IF people think someone has always been very rich, they will say he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

The saying goes back to the 16th and 17th century when it was customary for godchildren of wealthy families to be given sets of silver spoons as christening presents. Silver remains a traditional christening present among those who can afford it, though the baby of rich parents is far less likely to be fed with a silver spoon these days.
