Hindu holy men sit on the roof of a car while crossing a bridge over India's holiest river, the Ganges, before taking a holy dip during the Maha Kumbh Mela in the northern Indian city of Allahabad on Monday. The "Royal Bath" day began about one hour before dawn, with sadhus, or elite holy men, taking turns to immerse themselves in the Ganges at the confluence point known as Sangam. The organisers of the festival, which takes place in Allahabad every 12 years, believe that up to 70 million people could take part over its six weeks.
