Litmus test for
Talwandi AMRITSAR, Dec 11— The SGPC executive meeting, scheduled for December 12 and 13, will be a litmus test for newly appointed President Jagdev Singh Talwandi as some ticklish issues like appointment of Giani Puran Singh and reviewing sending of Sikh jathas to Pakistan are likely to dominate the proceedings. Giani Charn Singh, the seniormost priest of the Golden Temple, was superseded with the appointment of Giani Puran Singh. Two executive members, Mr Joginder Singh Panjrath and Mr Suba Singh, who belong to the ruling party, were party to the decision to sack Giani Puran Singh as Jathedar. Another executive member, Mr Jangh Bahadur Singh, is a confidant of outgoing SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur. He may also oppose the ‘Hukamnama’ of Giani Puran Singh. Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, General Secretary, had too opposed the ‘Hukamnama’ issued from Guna (Madhya Pradesh) wherein the SGPC chief was excommunicated from the Sikh Panth. Executive members belonging to the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal and the SAD (Amritsar) will also seek a clarification from the ruling party if his (Giani Puran Singh’s) suspension as granthi was wrong how that he had been appointed Head Granthi. Prof Suba Singh, President, Sikh Scholars Forum and a member of the Chief Khalsa Diwan, has urged Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar, Akal Takht, to summon Mr Talwandi at Akal Takht for Giani Puran Singh’s appointment. He has objected to Giani Puran Singh describing Sikhs as descendents of Luv and Kush, which is against the tenets of Sikhism. He feels by imposing a ban on “Nanakshahi calendar”, during his tenure as Jathedar, Akal Takht, Giani Puran Singh had worked under of the “influence of RSS lobby”. However, Mr Balbir Singh Pannu, Senior Vice-President, will support the appointment of Giani Puran Singh. Another item on the agenda is sending of jathas to Pakistan. While Mr Jagdev Singh Talwandi has already stated that the boycott of jathas to Pakistan was a wrong decision, the executive may find a ‘way out’ in this regard. The executive meeting will discuss at length the recruitment of 489 employees during the tenure of Bibi Jagir Kaur. The Judicial Commission has already stopped the salaries of 250 employees recruited without the approval of the executive. Another item on the agenda is the cases registered against Bibi Jagir Kaur with the Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission. Yet another point for discussion is the three-member inquiry report against Dr Gurbachan Singh Bachan wherein he has been indicted for making a payment of Rs 2 lakh in violation of SGPC bylaws. Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, now General Secretary SGPC, was a member of the inquiry committee. Mr Pannu, Senior Vice-President, had raised the issue of misappropriation by Dr Bachan. |
