Left, Trinamool men clash in LS NEW DELHI, Nov 29 — Members of the Left Front clashed with Trinamool Congress members for the second day today in the Lok Sabha after the Opposition party in West Bengal raised the issue of the law and order situation in the state. Mr Sudip Bandhopadhyay of the Trinamool Congress had members of the Left parties on their feet when he alleged that the law and order machinery had collapsed in the state. He demanded imposition of President’s rule in the state. Left Front members objected to the reference of West Bengal by the Trinamool Congress member and urged the chair not to allow the members to raise matters concerning the states. Raising the issue for the second consecutive day during zero hour, Mr Bandhopadhyay said people belonging to the minorities, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were being tortured and killed and the state government was doing little to protect them. Speaker G.M.C. Balayogi repeatedly asked Left party members to allow the Trinamool Congress member to have his say. CPM member Basudeb Acharia, who had heated exchanges with Trinamool Congress members, wanted to know how could they be allowed to raise state matters, especially the law and order situation, which was a state subject. Without naming Mr Jyoti Basu, Mr Bandhopadhyay described him as an “extra-constitutional authority” and said two Chief Ministers were currently functioning in the state. He urged the Centre to take recourse to Article 356 of the Constitution and impose President’s rule in West Bengal to protect the minorities, SCs and STs. |
