Crucial SGPC meeting today

AMRITSAR, Nov 28 — A crucial meeting of SGPC members, to be presided over by Mr Parkash Singh Badal, SAD president, will be held in Gurdass Hall here tomorrow.

Though the meeting has been called to decide the candidate for the SGPC chief’s election, sources say that Mr Badal may not announce the name for obvious reasons. The name of the candidate would be announced at the general House meeting of the SGPC, which would elect its new president.

The Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal (SHSAD), which had earlier announced that it would not take part in the election, has now convened a meeting on November 30, before the election of the president. The SHSAD had announced that if Bibi Jagir Kaur was fielded again, a candidate from the Tohra faction would also contest the election.

In case of repetition of the name of Bibi Jagir Kaur, some members of the ruling party might indulge in cross-voting. Though the SGPC has published a pictorial booklet for highlighting the ‘achievements of the Shiromani committee’, the tenure of Bibi Jagir Kaur is considered to be the ‘worst’ in the 80-year-old history of the SGPC.
