Facilities for career enhancement

VARIOUS educational as well as other qualifications are required to be obtained by a soldier during his service for enhancement of his career and professional excellence. The Indian Army provides vast opportunities to a soldier to acquire professional knowledge through various courses and to pursue higher studies for widening his mental horizon.

“Join the Army if you don’t want to study any more”, is the impression that most of the people who have joined the Army had. However, this is not true. “Educated soldier is a better solider” — this is what the Army believes. A soldier is a matriculate when he joins the Army. After recruitment he is afforded a number of opportunities to have his educational skills further honed. This is ensured through a well-planned human resource development schedule. This programme is spread over a number of years and the individual is made to improve both his soldierly skills and educational standards gradually.

As the jawan grows in service and rank, he is motivated and given opportunities to acquire higher qualifications in a variety of disciplines. These include both Indian and foreign languages, vocational training and environment developmental training. By the time a jawan reaches the age of superannuation, he is realy to get absorbed in society.

Any soldier who wants to improve his educational qualifications is given the opportunity to attend classes for the following examination.

(a) Secondary School Certificate of Exam for Class IX and X. The duration of class for these exam is six months and conducted by the Human Resource Development Centre at Headquarters Corps/Command.

(b) Senior School of Certificate of Exam for Class XI and XII. Human Resource Development Centres Headquarters Corps/Command conducts classes for humanities. Classes for the science stream are run at Army Educational Corps Training College and Centre, Panchmarhi.

The Indian Army has a clear vision of the information technology environment of the future. It has geared itself to meet the future information technology requirements. Computers have been released to units from the Army Headquarters to make use of computers in day-to-day functioning. Computer courses are run at regimental centres, the formation level and the unit level to meet the information technology demand.

Human Resource Development Centre: The Human Resource Development Centres since its inception about 15 years back have rendered yeomen’s service to the jawns ‘educational needs by forwarding Army’s agenda in this field. Wedded to their motto of strengthening the human resource of the Army, the Human Resource Development Centres are engaged in enhancing educational access to the jawans by providing them with facilities to acquire qualifications through recognised national universities.

Foreign language courses: Certain foreign languages like Chinese, Bhutanese, Tibetan, Sinhala, Burmese, Nepalese, Pushto, German, Spanish, French, Bahasa, Russian and Arabic, and run by the School of Foreign Languages, which is also recognised by Army.

Facilities for civil education: Certain facilities to enhance to the civil professional qualification offered to Armed Forces personnel and their wards exist; These are recognised by the Army All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) in various disciplines i.e. management, law, medicine and engineering. — TNS

Career hotline

I have passed Class XII and wish to pursue a career in advertising. Is it necessary to acquire a bachelor’s degree? Kindly suggest some recognised institutions offering courses in advertising.

Damini Bhatia, Amritsar

Though it is not mandatory to acquire a Bachelor’s degree to take up a course in Advertising, doing graduation certainly helps to the extent that you are found eligible for most of the reputed PG courses in Advertising. Very few advertising courses are offered at the undergraduate level.

The University of Delhi, Manipur University and the University of Mumbai offer Advertising as a course at the undergraduate level. After graduation, you could do a PG diploma in Advertising from institutes such as the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi; Mudra Institute of Communications (MICA), Ahmedabad; Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi; Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan; The Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai; Rajendra Prasad Institute of Communication & Management, Mumbai etc.

I am a class XII student interested in joining the Defence Services. Could you please give me the necessary information?

Rahul Ghai, Jallandhar

You can join the defence services either after finishing your 10+2 or after obtaining your degree. If you want to join straight after class XII, then you must seek admission to the National Defence Academy (NDA) or the Naval Academy (Executive Branch). Recruitment to these academies is done through an annual examination, which is usually held in April. The notification for the exam is usually out by mid-October. The last date for filling in the application forms is mostly towards November-end of the previous year

The written exam consists of two papers, both of which are of objective type. Paper I is on Maths (300 marks) and Paper II is on General Ability (600 marks). The paper is further divided into two parts: Part A consists of questions on English, and Part B consists of questions on General Knowledge — Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Freedom Movement, Geography and Current Events.

For joining the Air Force and Navy wings of the armed forces you need Maths and Physics at the 10+2 level. You have to apply to the Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, New Delhi-110011 by sending the completed application form.

There are also certain physical requirements that you have to meet, which are specified in the notification.

I have completed my postgraduation in human physiology with specialisation in microbiology and immunology. Could you please tell me about the job prospects in this field?

Grusha Arora, Jhajjar

Microbiology, one of the frontier fields in Life Sciences, has varied applications in research & industry. Research-based jobs abound for those with a postgraduation in this subject. Of course, those with a doctorate in this field are in great demand.

Job opportunities for microbiologists exist in hospitals where they are required to undertake microbiological testing of samples from patients as an aid to diagnosing and treating diseases. The pharmaceutical, food & drink and water industries also employ microbiologists in large numbers. In the pharmaceutical sector, microbiological work includes studying microbes that cause diseases (human, animal as well as plant diseases), evaluating antibiotics and developing vaccines, manufacturing drugs by fermentation, etc. Opportunities also arise with manufacturers of products such as medical disposable goods, cosmetics and antiseptics. Those working in water departments undertake routine testing of water supplied to industrial and domestic users. Other destinations include university departments and government-funded research institutes.
