Jharkhand comes into being
RANCHI, Nov 14 — Jharkhand, the 28th state of the Indian Union, was born shortly past midnight tonight with the swearing in of the Governor Prabhat Kumar and Chief Minister Babu Lal Marandi (42), whose oath-taking was delayed by half an hour by a last-minute drama of claim to government formation by his closest rival JMM (S) chief Shibu Soren.

Court rejects Gore’s plea on deadline
WASHINGTON, Nov 14 — In a major setback to US Democrat presidential hopeful Al Gore, the Florida State Court today rejected his demand for extending the 5 p.m. deadline for hand count of presidential votes in some Florida counties.

CHANDIGARH, Nov 14 — Claiming to be innocent and falsely implicated in the Harpreet Kaur murder case, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief, Bibi Jagir Kaur, today moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court here for bail in the event of her arrest by the CBI.

VHP yajna thwarted
80 activists detained
NEW DELHI, Nov 14 — The Delhi police detained 80 activists of the VHP when they tried to perform yajna on the premises of Quwwat-ul Islam mosque near the historic Qutab Minar in South Delhi. A large number of VHP activists led by Mr Ram Krishan Gaur gathered near Qutab Minar today, where the mosque is located, to perform puja inside its premises. But their entry inside the mosque was prevented by tight security, the police said.

Bodies of crash victims retrieved
NEW DELHI, Nov 14 — After a day-long herculean effort, the bodies of all seven services personnel killed in the crash of a MI-8 helicopter near the Indo-Pak border in the Rann of Kutch were retreived today from deep marshes, even as five survivors were being treated in a military hospital.

LAHORE (Pakistan), Nov 14 — Even as the SGPC has imposed a ban on jathas to Pakistan in protest against the formation of the Pakistan Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Gen Parvez Musharraf, Chief Executive, Government of Pakistan, has asked Sikh pilgrims to visit the gurdwaras in Pakistan “at will”.

Village wakes up to see all lost
BATAPORA (Wathora), Nov 14 — It was a horrifying experience for Khatji, an 80-year-old village woman, who had to be herded along with other women and children in one house at one end of the village. When security forces left the village after concluding the four-day operation against militants on November 5, Khatji saw her house reduced to a rubble.
