Bahuguna, wife attacked

TEHRI GARHWAL, Oct 25 (PTI) — Noted environmentalist and “chipko” movement leader, Sunder Lal Bahuguna and his wife suffered serious injuries when they were attacked by a mentally deranged person here today.

Sources at the government hospital here said both have been admitted with serious head injuries.

Mr Bahuguna’s son, Rajiv Bahuguna said his father was sitting near his cottage on the banks of the Ganga river this morning when a mentally deranged youth attacked him with a piece of stone.

His wife, who rushed to his defence also suffered injuries, he said, adding that the youth was later handed over to the police.

Terming the attack as a well planned conspiracy against his father, Rajiv Bahuguna said he had been attacked earlier also and the police had been apprised of the threat to his life.

Mr Bahuguna alleged that the police did not interrogate the youth and let him off.

Major political parties have condemned the attack and demanded adequate security for the environmentalist.
