AGRA, Oct 13—As the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, celebrated the completion of one year in office, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) today expressed displeasure over the functioning of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, saying, “We changed governments, parties and slogans” but with no desired result.

“The politicians, who have to take a holistic view of the prevailing problems and take effective and bold steps, are playing power politics and are busy saving their seats,” Mr Mohan Rao Bhagwat, General Secretary of the RSS,said at the inauguration of the three-day “Rashtriya Raksha Mahashivir” being organised on the outskirts of the city of the Taj to commemorate the organisation's 75th year of existence.

Mr Bhagwat’s address to the large gathering of Swayamsevaks in the sprawling ground in the presence of the RSS chief, Mr K.S.Sudarshan, and other top party functionaries and guests was full of “dissatisfaction” over the present political, economic, social and cultural situation in the country.

“Many a compromise has been made by the government under international pressure, knowing very well that that does not augur well for the country,” the second- in -command of the RSS said.

The economic and cultural downfall has resulted in a feeling of "frustration and alienation" among the common man and a defeatist attitude is seeping into the minds of an ordinary people, he said.

The RSS leader also expressed concern over the cross-border terrorism, infiltrations in the Kashmir valley and other places and the nefarious activities of Pakistan's ISI.

He stated that the RSS agenda was not to support a single party.

“What we want today is selfless and strong politicians and people who tirelessly work for nation building,” he said.

On the economic front, he accused the government of reeling under the pressure of multinational companies and lack of adequate measures to tackle debt burden.

“Due to debt crisis and international pressure many decisions have been taken (by the government) knowing very well that it does not augur well for the nation,” he said.

Even as the RSS was under attack from various Christian organisations for alleged attacks on Christian missions recently, the RSS leader minced no words in opposing conversion.

A former RSS chief, Raju Bhaiya, Air Marshal (retd) Tirlochan Singh, Admiral (retd) K. K. Nayyar, Col (retd) Dhan Singh Thapa , Zee TV chief Subhash Goyal and Joint General Secretary of the RSS Madan Das were among those present on the dais.

As many 75,000 Swayamsevaks from the age group of three to 80 from across the country are participating in the three-day Mahashivir.
